Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. CRS’ relief and development work is accomplished through programs of emergency response, HIV, health, agriculture, education, microfinance and peacebuilding.  

CRS’ Nigeria office is implementing a 2-year 9months, Germany government project entitled, “Stabilization and Reconciliation in the Lake Chad Region (STaR)” in the North East of Nigeria. Through programming in agriculture & livelihoods, social cohesion, community infrastructure and local governance, the project is intended to contribute to the stabilization and reconciliation in the most affected regions of the Lake Chad Basin namely Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states in Nigeria, Diffa in Niger, and the Lake Region in Chad. 

Job Summary: 

The Field Enumerator will work under the supervision of STaR MEAL officer and implementing partner MEAL staff to provide research and organizational support to data demand and use by the Stabilization and Reconciliation in the Lake Chad Region (STaR) project. S/he is primarily responsible for collecting field data across all sectors including periodic assessments / surveys and routine gathering of project implementation information collection; s/he will have direct contact with respondents and have a great bearing on the quality of data collected and ultimately on the quality of data output. 

Roles and Key Responsibilities of the field Enumerator:     

  • Under the supervision of the MEAL officer, use Information Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) solutions throughout the period of engagement in field data collection recommended by CRS. 
  • Attend enumerators training workshop, depending on the tool will participate in 3 – 5 days of training on questionnaire and simulation test in-field. 
  • Recognize and give an account of problems in obtaining data
  • Locate (or select) Sample members as described in the data collection strategy 
  • Record responses as instructed with tools provided by CRS, submit completed tasks to a supervisor and discuss developments daily.
  • Comply with the requirements necessary for conducting a successful interview. 
  • Together with the MEAL Supervisor review data gathered from an interview to check if they are complete and accurate.
  • Ensure that all questionnaires and equipment are accounted for.
  • Support the MEAL team manage an enumeration schedule/ itinerary. 
  • Turn over all literature and materials used in the survey to the principal investigator. Required Languages – English, Hausa is mandatory, Kanuri is an added advantage. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

  • Highly organized individual, capable of handling multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and managing time effectively.
  • Experience in utilizing technology tools and possess the ability to master new technology tools, as required.
  • Familiarity with the use of an Android tablet
  • Ability to pay full attention to what others are saying, understand the points being made, and ask appropriate questions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as an effective team player.
  • Ability to gather information by carefully observing, receiving, and obtaining useful data from related sources.   
  • Outstanding communications, writing, and research skills 
  • Confidence and can-do attitude; ability to advance projects with minimal supervision.  •   Should be familiar with the area or the locality they are working in
  • Must have a valid form of identification.

Key Working Relationships:   

MEAL Officer, MEAL Assistance, Partner MEAL staff 

 Education and Experience 

  • HND/ BSC degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, Anthropology, Agriculture (bachelor’s degree is most preferred)
  • At least 1-year experience in data collection working with Community Base Organization, INGO, or UN Agencies in the experience in the Northeast Region of Nigeria is Mandatory.
