Tdh in Nigeria implements projects in Wash, Child Protection and Education sectors.
General description of the position:
Under the supervision of the Hygiene Promotion Officer, the Hygiene Assistant will be responsible for ensuring high quality and timely delivery of all the WASH-related Hygiene Promotion (Software) will contribute to the objective of improving WASH to beneficiaries through improving access to safe water and sanitation, and impacting good behaviour change in hygiene practices in Bakassi and Gubio camp. To ensure the complementarity of WASH hardware and software components to address existing WASH needs in the targeted camps. This includes regular supervision and monitoring of all hygiene and promotion activities by hygiene promotion volunteers. The position will also support the WASH emergency preparedness and response activities in the project areas.
Responsibilities and tasks:
Project Management:
- Implements, monitors, and supervises the activities of hygiene promotion volunteers in Gubio and Bakassi camps.
- Under the supervision and in cooperation with the Hygiene Promotion Officer, participate in flood response activities with a focus on hygiene promotion, and distribution of WASH NFIs, hygiene promotion awareness, and sensitization to IDPs, by multiple objectives, activities, and targets outlined within current donor proposals and in line with projects’ budgets, impact to beneficiaries and hygiene promotion standards.
- Ensures that activities of hygiene promotion volunteers are appropriately monitored and evaluated, under the supervision and in cooperation with the Hygiene Promotion Officer.
- Participate in regular assessments of the hygiene promotion activities with the Kobo toolbox tools and activities outcomes according to the M&E plan.
Project Strategy and Planning:
- Under the supervision and in cooperation with the Hygiene Promotion Supervisor, contributes to the design and implementation of all technical and management aspects of the hygiene & promotion activities for improved support to beneficiaries and contributes actively to its monitoring, evaluation, and revision.
- Participates in know-how capitalization, lessons learned, and handover reports.
Technical supervision:
- Ensure that the hygiene promotion activities are implemented based on the WASH quality standards and through WASH Quality guidelines and checklists.
- Support WASH in emergencies (flood response, public health outbreak) planning and response interventions.
- Daily monitoring and recording of field activities related to WASH-Hygiene promotion and track the project planned activity progress daily.
- Weekly (or each time when necessary) brief written and oral reports to the line manager.
- Participate actively in terms of collecting required data for donors’ reports and proposals.
- Assist the MEAL team in monitoring and evaluation and ensure project lessons are documented for future notes. Communicate techniques on environmental, food, and water hygiene in the target households/ communities. Ensure that the various aspects of hygiene activities are integrated with Gender, Protection, and Health.
- Cooperation with local authorities and local communities, participation in meetings, and reporting from meetings to the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer.
- Facilitating appropriate community involvement in designing and delivering essential WASH services and facilities, carrying out community mobilization activities, and liaising with crucial stakeholders.
- Mobilize and conduct community hygiene and sanitation campaign sessions, focus group discussions, and meetings with key informants
- Arranging and sorting WASH IEC materials and ensuring proper usage, liaising with Logistics, and informing the Hygiene Promotion Officer about possible shortages.
- Contributes to the preparation of distribution lists, distribution strategies, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), hygiene promotion outreach strategies, and the monitoring of these activities, in coordination with the Hygiene Promotion officer.
- Providing support/carrying out WASH-NFI distributions, organizing distribution according to Hygiene Promotion team guidance & providing stock count for WASH NFIs, informing the community about the rules during distribution as well as proper usage of items; handing over items to the community; keeping records of NFIs recipients.
- Attending field-based WASH Cluster meetings upon request from the Hygiene Promotion Officer
- Maintains proper records to ensure quality compliance with hygiene promotion activities.
Capacity building:
- Identify learning and training opportunities for Hygiene Promotion Volunteers and work as a mentor and role model for volunteers.
- Provide technical support to WASH team members as needed.
- In cooperation with the Hygiene Promotion officer and Supervisor, provide capacity-building support to the WASH team, relevant local authorities, and community workers and community groups, as required by the project, particularly with the Local Authority.
Reporting:
- Ensures that weekly and monthly data analysis reports are submitted.
- Upon completion of the assignment, submit the report.
- Provide compiled meeting minutes reports to the Hygiene Promotion Officer.
Database:
- Provides data to the database tools for the M&E of the hygiene & promotion activities.
- Ensures correct data protection procedures, and regular and effective data collection and reporting.
Security:
- Compliance with Tdh Security Regulations.
- Reports any security/safety incident and/or risk to his supervisor.
- Informs WASH staff on security rules defined.
Others:
- Undertakes all other duties that may be determined by the Hygiene Promotion Officer and Supervisor, or WASH team, which are compatible with the job.
- Maintains and ensures a culture of strict confidentiality – inter Tdh staff and between Tdh staff and non-Tdh employees.

Requirements:
- Diploma relevant to Public Health, Health Education, Community Health, or Sociology.
- Minimum 1 year’s expertise with an international NGO on hygiene promotion, with a special focus on the community-based participatory promotion of hygiene (hand washing at critical times, water safety chain and safe storage and handling, environmental sanitation and solid waste management, cleanliness around water point vicinity, water-borne diseases), and distribution of NFIs to IDPs and returnees.
- Advanced computer skills.
English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa Arabic.
