Nutrition NGO Jobs in Nigeria and Africa: Where to Look

Finding nutrition NGO jobs in Nigeria and Africa is easier when you search by function, geography and employer, then independently verify each opportunity. This guide provides a repeatable search method and points to real NGOJobSite job descriptions as historical career examples.

Essential concepts for ethical nutrition programmes

Nutrition is connected to food, health services, caregiving practices, clean water, sanitation and household resources. A community can have food available and still face malnutrition caused by illness, inadequate dietary diversity or barriers to care. That is why nutrition teams coordinate with health, WASH, protection and food security colleagues.

Nutrition-specific interventions address immediate nutritional risks, such as appropriate treatment and referral pathways for acute malnutrition or counselling on infant and young child feeding. Nutrition-sensitive interventions address underlying influences through food security, agriculture, social protection, education or water and sanitation. Job applicants should understand the distinction without assuming all posts require the same clinical expertise.

Work with children and caregivers requires confidentiality, respectful communication, informed consent where applicable, safeguarding, and approved referral protocols. Clinical assessments and treatment decisions belong to appropriately trained and authorised personnel. A general programme employee should not undertake diagnosis or treatment simply because a vacancy mentions nutrition.

Search beyond one job title

Combine “nutrition NGO jobs Nigeria” with variants such as “Nutrition Assistant”, “Nutrition Officer”, “IYCF counsellor”, “nutrition project officer”, “CMAM programme”, “nutrition MEAL assistant”, “nutrition surveillance” and “community nutrition mobiliser”. Search both technical and support roles if your skills cross boundaries.

Narrow searches by duty station only where helpful: Borno, Maiduguri, Yobe, Adamawa, Abuja and Lagos appear in historical examples, but a location mentioned in an old post is not evidence of a current hiring opportunity. Check both national and international NGOs and smaller local civil society organisations.

How to verify a real vacancy

Start with the employer’s career site or a trusted publisher such as NGOJobSite, then inspect the original recruitment announcement. Confirm the application deadline, actual duty station, required work authorisation, educational criteria and application mechanism. Some posts are tied to funded projects and may not proceed exactly as anticipated.

Do not pay application or interview fees to unknown contacts. Avoid WhatsApp-only recruiters who cannot provide a verifiable organisational channel. Keep a log of where you found each vacancy and when you last checked it.

Illustrative roles from NGOJobSite

Examples include Nutrition Officer at Jhpiego Nigeria in Abuja, Nutrition Programme Support Officer at Lagos Food Bank Initiative in Lagos, Nutrition Assistant at Save the Children in Adamawa, and Project Officer (Nutrition) at Elela Care in Borno. These listings were published previously; none has been checked as open for applications today. Use the descriptions to learn how roles differ, not as live job leads.

A focused application method

Create a simple tracking table with organisation, title, location, source URL, date seen, deadline and eligibility notes. Apply first where your education and experience match mandatory requirements. Tailor your CV summary and select two or three strong evidence-based bullets. If the role requires counselling or clinical expertise, be precise about your training and professional status.

Before submitting, check the spelling of the organisation, attachments, contact details and any required answers. A concise targeted application is usually more informative than a generic document that repeats every nutrition acronym.
