The MENTOR Initiative is a UK registered charitable, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization working globally to
relieve human suffering from tropical diseases. With support from BHA-PUI, USDA and UNF, The MENTOR Initiative
is implementing Emergency Control of Malaria amongst high malarious areas in Borno state. The MENTOR Initiative
works in close partnership with the MoH in Nigeria to build technical capacity and effective planning and responses to
malaria and other VBDs.

Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge Requirements :
- Qualified Medical Doctor, minimum MBBS.
- Clinical background with experience in primary health care, Integrated community case management, malaria and vector borne
disease control programmes - Experience in Primary healthcare systems, community & public health, Nutrition in emergencies in Nigeria an advantage
- Knowledge of Clinical protocols including Integrated Community Case Management of Childhood illnesses (iCCM), and National
Guidelines for Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Malaria Nigeria - Knowledge of Medical data reporting and surveillance and management of Mobile Clinics and outreach consultations
- Previous experience of coaching, capacity building & training of health care workers
- Previous experience supervising staff preferred
- Previous experience working with an INGO/NGO preferred
Languages:
Fluency in English and Kanuri mandatory. Knowledge of Hausa is a distinct advantage

- The MENTOR Initiative is seeking an experienced Medical Officer to work in Maiduguri/Jere -Borno State as part of an Emergency
- Response Programmme to ensure access to improved lifesaving disease prevention and health services for vulnerable
- communities in Borno State.
- Summary of duties and responsibilities
- Oversee and provide clinical support in the provision of free of charge curative health consultations at health
- facility and mobile clinic sessions
- Prepare all the necessary drugs, material and equipment for mobile clinics and ensure that everything is ready before
departure to the field. - Follow the basic medical rules of hygiene when performing curative health consultations
- Participate actively in triage activities before to start curative health consultations
- Perform curative consultations:
Take a proper medical history including:
Reason for consultation
Duration of the illness or complaints
Main symptoms
Past medical history and treatment.
Perform a correct physical examination: - Inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation
- Systematic checking of signs of severity
- Diagnose and treat the diseases according to protocols in use (i.e. clinical guidelines)
- Write the most important complaints, signs, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment on the patient’s registration form.
- Explain the treatment to the patient
- Give individual health education related to the patient’s disease
- Manage emergency cases according to emergency/ referral protocols and regulation
- Fill in the registration form for each patient, according to the diagnosis of the morbidity surveillance form
- Check the immunization status for all EPI targeted children and referred the unvaccinated children to the vaccinator
- Investigate any information regarding unusual health events or diseases outbreak, provided through any source
- Ensure patient confidentiality is respected and treat all the patients with respect and dignity
Oversee the Admission, weekly medical follow-up and discharge of the malnourished children in OTP program (if
available in the supported health facility) - Ensure that all the 6-59 months children are screened (MUAC, H/W and edemas) and referred/oriented for proper
management in line with treatment protocols. - Admit new cases in OTP program according to the criteria’s of national nutrition protocol and give systematic treatment for
SAM cases - Ensure weekly follow up of SAM cases and adapt RUTF doses
- Discharge cases according to the criteria’s of national nutrition protocol
- Refer complicated SAM cases to identified Stabilization Center
- Fill in the specific OTP form
Collection, computerization and analysis of weekly epidemiological data - Perform the daily data collection regarding curative consultations
- Participate to the weekly computerization and analysis of the medical data
- Ensure proper management stocks of drugs and supplies to health facilities and mobile clinics
Reporting and attendance to different meetings - Prepare weekly activities report to submit to team leader
- Participate in a pro-active way in MENTOR internal meetings (medical, security…)
- Participate to all the trainings organized by MENTOR

- Give suggestions to improve the functioning of MENTOR mobile clinics
- Participate to the loading and unloading of the vehicles and to the setting up of the mobile clinics
- Participate to weekly physical inventory of mobile clinic pharmacy
- Be flexible in performing his/her duties to ensure that beneficiaries are getting good quality services
- Perform other additional duties on request of the team leader
- Inform immediately the security focal point in case of any security problem in the field
- Plan activities for mobile clinics in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and catchment health facility teams
- – Manage the team of mobile Clinic staff to ensure they carry out their assigned tasks effectively
- Adhere to the agreed MENTOR Code of conduct on Ethics and Integrity and safeguarding including Whistle blowing
- policy.
As the MENTOR Initiative is working in a constantly changing humanitarian aid environment, reasonable specific work duties maybe requested that may not fit into the above job description, but which will help promote over all programs goals and aims.Similarly, while work on weekend will not normally be required, requests to do so should be regarded as falling within the 40hr
working week stipulated within the MENTOR-Initiative’s standard working contract, of which this job description forms a part.
