Job Title: WASH Assistant

General Position Summary

  • The WASH Assistant will support the day-to-day implementation of the Humanitarian WASH intervention in Northeast Nigeria.
  • He/She will work closely with the WASH team, operations, and finance to jointly execute WASH activities according to plan.
  • He/ She will also support administratively by ensuring all program-related documents are filed / archived appropriately, preparing procurement requests, payment requests and following up with operations and finance on behalf of the team.

Essential Job Functions

  • With the support of the Senior WASH Officer, assist the WASH team in preparing PRs, activity budget, payment requests and following up on payment for contractors and vendors.
  • Support in the implementation of WASH interventions at the field location where necessary to include household visits, to supervise the construction of WASH infrastructures.
  • If requested, participate in any inter sectorial assessment processes, including analysis and planning.
  • Provide regular reports, document results, and maintain detailed records
  • Maintain comprehensive control systems on materials and tools used including notes on the quality of materials and detailed material records.
  • Integrate community approaches, gender sensitivity and capacity building into all activities as appropriate.
  • Ensure program filing system is in place, adheres to internal and donor regulation and filing is regularly maintained.
  • Adhere to all MC policies related to security, operations and transport/ logistics information related to programming.

Security:

  • Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by country leadership.
  • Proactively ensure that team members operate in a secure environment and are aware of policies.

Accountability to Beneficiaries:

  • Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • NIL.

Accountability:

  • Reports Directly To: WASH Officer.
  • Works Directly With: All program teams, Operations, and MC beneficiaries.

Knowledge and Experience

  • University Degree / HND in Civil Engineering, Natural / Social Sciences, or equivalent preferred.
  • 1 – 2 years of experience working in the development sector, or humanitarian program; community-based programming experience required.
  • Previous humanitarian or development programming experience is required.
  • Familiarity with the intervention areas.
  • Experience in any of the WASH components is a plus.
  • Microsoft Office Skills (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Willing and able to travel to remote areas, where services are limited.
  • Professional, good organizational capacity, good human relationships, motivated, flexible, culturally sensitive, and good communication skills.
  • Fluency in Hausa, Kanuri and English.
  • Previous experience in WASH programming.
  • Previous experience with MC is an added advantage.
