Job Title: Protection Officer

Location: Maiduguri, Nigeria

General Context of the Job/Project: 

The Protection Officer responsible in safeguarding individuals and communities, particularly in humanitarian or security contexts. This position involves assessing risks, implementing security measures, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and collaborating with relevant authorities to enhance the well-being and security of vulnerable populations.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

1. Conduct assessments of protection risks and vulnerabilities among individuals and communities affected by humanitarian crises or insecurity.
2. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate protection risks and enhance the safety and security of vulnerable populations, including women, children, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups.
3. Implement security measures and protocols to safeguard individuals, communities, and humanitarian operations, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and authorities.
4. Ensure compliance with safety and security protocols, standards, and guidelines established by SHO, donors, and humanitarian coordination mechanisms.
5. Collaborate with local authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to build relationships and partnerships that support protection initiatives and enhance community resilience.
6. Facilitate training sessions, workshops, and awareness programs on protection principles, human rights, gender equality, and prevention of gender-based violence (GBV) for community members, SHO staff, and other relevant stakeholders.
7. Provide support and guidance to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and other protection concerns, including facilitating access to essential services and referrals to appropriate service providers.
8. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of protection interventions, conducting regular field visits, assessments, and surveys to assess program impact and identify areas for improvement.
9. Document and report on protection incidents, trends, and best practices, ensuring confidentiality and data protection measures are followed.
10. Collaborate with other sectors, including health, education, and livelihoods, to mainstream protection principles and integrate protection considerations into SHO programs and interventions.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Rights, International Development, or a related field. Additional training or certification in protection, human rights, or humanitarian law is preferred.
2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in protection programming, preferably in humanitarian or development contexts.
3. Strong understanding of protection principles, human rights standards, and international humanitarian law, with a focus on vulnerable populations and conflict-affected communities.
4. Knowledge of protection risks and vulnerabilities faced by women, children, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups in humanitarian settings.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders, including survivors of violence, community leaders, and government authorities.
6. Proven ability to assess risks, analyze complex situations, and develop and implement protection strategies and interventions.
7. Experience in conducting training sessions, workshops, and awareness programs on protection, human rights, and GBV prevention.
8. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging and fast-paced environments.
9. Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is required. Knowledge of local languages is an asset.
