Protection Officer At Grow Strong Foundation (GSF)

Grow Strong Foundation (GSF) is a child-focused women and youth-led non-profit organization established in 2017. GSF is providing humanitarian assistance to Children, IDPs, and other highly vulnerable in collaboration with NHF-OCHA in Northeastern Nigeria. As part of our commitment to achieving the objectives of our strategic plan, GSF is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the vacant position.

Position: Protection Officer                         

Location: Maiduguri

Reporting: Program Manager

Starting Date: 13- March-2024

Languages Required: English, Hausa & Kanuri  

Purpose: This position is responsible for assessment, response analysis, design and implementation of the child protection components of the project. S/he will need to co-ordinate with other Emergency Response team members and GSF staff, especially education and other relevant technical sectors, to ensure a rapid, proportionate and effective response. S/he will need to ensure response to immediate child protection issues with simultaneous consideration of longer term needs and possible scenarios in the camps. Depending on the situation the officer may need to take a very active role in technical co-ordination, support and advocacy with the child protection Sub Sector and other stakeholders and technical agencies relevant to the sector. They will be working 100% on the project.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate all trainings and train Outreach PSS Animators
  • Collate and compile all work plans and share weekly with the team.
  • Conduct referral and  protection mapping (any other assessments)
  • Lead the formation and initial training of Child Protection Committees (CPCs).
  • Ensure CPC meetings and activities hold 
  • Ensure all documentation, reports, and records are maintained per agreed procedure, and information is provided on community activities as required.
  • Facilitate mentoring and coaching of CPCs on various topics, as outlined in the implementation plan.
  • Maintain documentation and M&E systems at the community/state office level: under the guidance of M&E Officer, work with the CPC to ensure that all documents for children and families are kept up-to-date, accurate, and secure; and ensure that information is compiled as needed in an accurate and timely basis to assess progress against activities and outcomes for each community.
  • Work with the Program Manager to ensure that all financial activities conducted in camps are properly documented in line with UNICEF procedures and with GSF policies. 
  • Ensure all cases are referred to identified stakeholders
  • Participate in CP sub sector Coordination Meeting and any other CP coordination meetings as requested
  • Coordinate with the sub CP Sector in order to assure that adequate and children centered solutions are taken in consideration in the strategic planning of activities
  • Supervise the PSS Animators during CFS activities ensuring activities are implemented in an appropriate  manner
  • Ensure humanitarian safeguarding  matrix standards are understood and met
  • Ensure parents and caregivers are informed on progress of children attending CFS
  • Conduct weekly visits to CFS locations to ensure its kept clean.
  • Ensure PSS Animators conduct inventory daily after CFS activities end. 
  • Finalize CFS time table with using the CFS guidelines handbook
  • Lead on informing parents, GSF office about security situations.
  • Report general protection issues present in the Communities to GSF program Manager
  • Participate in the CP assessment and analysis process in coordination with the CP team, support regular participatory activities with different groups of children to identify issues affecting children in camps and assists team to develop appropriate responses.
  • Must adhere to the child safeguarding and protection policies and reporting standards.
  • Write and submit weekly activity reports.
  • Other ad hoc tasks as requested by Line Manager.

Essential Criteria

  • University degree or equivalent in Social work, Social Science, development studies or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
  • Between two and three years of work experience in Protection work, supervision, community mobilisation and distributions and solid understanding of the actual Nigeria Emergency context. 
  • Proven ability to supervise a CP project with holistic approach and integrated to child protection right
  • Speaking fluent  English and Hausa 
  • Computer literate
