Contract Period: Indefinite

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Apply medical knowledge, skills to diagnose, and prevention. Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.
  2. Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood?
  3. Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/lDP patients, through daily visits, consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments — in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patien€s evolution.
  4. Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
  5. Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patient’s illness, medical error and monitors the proper functioning of the department, equipment or material.
  6. Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
  7. Knows and ensures MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing biohazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
  8. Manage the team under his/her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures, supervising their performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

Carry out all first (1st) consultations to all new patients visiting the mobile clinic according to MSF guidelines.

  • Collaborates with the PMR, NTS and HP supervisor in identifying a proper patient flow and SOP for the outreach activities
  • Consultation of all RED cases, orange and green cases    Takes referral decision for all patients.
  • Resuscitates and stabilizes all the critical patients before referral to secondary care.
  • Follows up progress of admitted cases to MOH facilities. (can this be delegated to the nurse in case of problems the nurse refers to the MD)
  • Whenever necessary supports the nurse seeing follow up cases

In collaboration with the PMR and nursing team supervisor organizes and plans the medical monthly meetings.

  1. In collaboration with nurse team supervisor assess the training needs trainings for the outreach paramedic team.
  2. Is responsible for surveillance and guides the HP team in detecting cases of communicable diseases in the community.

In case of suspect outbreak informs the PMR and HP manager (because he is attending the health sector meetings)

  • Follows the objective set by the PMR and achieves professional and personal objectives related to his/her role.
  • Participate in any other related activities as requested by the line manager.
  • Participate in meetings organized by the department or supervisor
  • Participate/go to mandatory trainings requested by the supervisor. Minimum Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s Medicines and Surgery (MBBS). Diploma in Tropical Medicine desirable. Experience: Minimum 2-year experience with MSF/other INGO as a Medical Doctor (can be within medical training)

Experience in Tropical medicine desirable

  • Experience in Public Health, Ops and Gynae, Paediatrics, Infectious disease (HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB, general practice, general medicine or minor surgery.
  • Languages: English language highly essential. Local language (Hausa, Kanuri) desirable.

            Knowledge: Basic computer literacy skills essential.
