The Kukah Centre for Faith and Leadership Research was incorporated on 17 December 2012 as a non-governmental organisation and began operations in Abuja. It identifies itself as a Research and Policy Think Tank that facilitates the participation of citizens in policy formulation and governance. With four key programme areas that include: Good Governance, Leadership Development, Memory Preservation, Advocacy & Knowledge Promotion and Inter-faith Dialogue at the core of its activities, it influences efforts towards bridging the gaps between public policy, faith, and leadership. The Kukah Centre is also the Secretariat of the National Peace Committee (NPC), an initiate made up of eminent elder statesmen who undertake efforts to make itself available for national mediation and conciliation to ensure peaceful electoral process and outcomes that is acceptable to the generality of Nigerians and the international community.

Additionally, its mission is to pursue the common good of all citizens where all Nigerians can live in a humane, democratic, and free society unbounded by structural, ethno-religious and socio-economic societal constructs. The Centre treats political leadership as a collaborative exercise and aims to promote governance structures which incorporate multiple levels of engagement, including Individuals, Households, Small Businesses, Community Gate Keepers (Traditional and Religious Leaders) the private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and institutions of government.

Responsibilities and Tasks

The Communication and Media Officer will lead on project corporate communications through the following:

  • Designs and implements The Kukah Centre communications strategies for the project objectives, outputs, and outcomes.
  • Prepare, monitor and report on the annual budget for communication with the guidance of the Project Manager.
  • Oversee and develop strategic partnerships with key media constituencies to elicit support for and maximise impact of project objectives, as well as ensuring communications engagements with journalists and agencies are in line with donor and Kukah Centre Policies.
  • Takes the lead in organising media outreaches, arranges all media contacts, press briefings, and interviews to ensure adequate coverage for all project activities.
  • Provide media and communications data protection of all information collected through the project implementation.
  • Provides advice and expertise to the project team on a range of advocacy and outreach issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications/public relations issues/problems.
  • Drafts project communications and advocacy materials including contributing The Kukah Centre’s newsletter, reports, promotional materials, and talking points for Senior Managers.
  • Coordinates production of a diverse range of project information and knowledge products (including audio/visual communications).
  • Responsible for disseminating all information relating to the project work in both conventional and social media (including the Centre’s website)
  • Establish metrics for gauging impact, evaluates results and impact of communications activities, reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding project implementation.
  • Contribute to the preparation of periodic reports, providing data on the impact of visibility actions related to project objectives, interventions, outputs and outcomes.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by supervisor and The Kukah Centre.

Required Expertise

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, information management or related field.

Specific Professional Experience

  • A minimum of 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in public information, public relations, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area, especially within development organisations and contexts.
  • Strong technical skills (sample works required) in writing, editing and proofreading, social media and online communication, including the use of content management systems (CMS).
  • Experience designing and coordinating communication campaigns to produce a variety of written and visual communications products in a clear, concise style.
  • Highly developed networking skills dealing with the media (press, online, audiovisual)
  • Keen eye for good stories, with the ability to address a range of issues in the context of political developments, public attitudes and local conditions.
  • Good Photography and digital media skills such as basic graphic design video editing, blog administration and layout skills for publications.
  • Excellent planning and prioritisation skills, to meet expected delivery dates and the tasks necessary to achieve objectives while juggling multiple concurrent projects and initiatives.
  • Experience in overseeing and guiding the development of communications and knowledge management strategies and products.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain positive, collaborative, productive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy.
  • Tailors’ language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
