Communications Consultant:

  • The Communications Consultant will work within the Communication Unit of the West Africa Trade & Investment Hub to create and implement communication strategies to support the needs of the Trade Hub and to highlight activities implemented by multiple co-investment partners in Senegal and other francophone countries.
  • The Consultant will work with a dynamic team to drive projects from initial concept through final delivery, working collaboratively with the technical team. The Consultant will provide administrative, event planning, writing/editing, and translation support for the communications section.
  • The estimated period of performance: October 20, 2022, to March 31, 2023.
  • Estimated Level of Effort: On average, the anticipated level of effort is 40 hours per week, with variations based on holidays and major events.

Background and Objective

  • The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded West Africa Trade & Investment Hub (Trade Hub) is a 5-year, $140.2 million trade and investment facilitation activity. The Trade Hub seeks to improve private sector productivity, profitability, and competitiveness in West Africa through market-based approaches that will generate new private sector investment in key sectors to create jobs and increase trade between the United States and West Africa. The Trade Hub is playing a role in transforming the business landscape in many communities to increase sustainable employment and strengthen value chains in the region.
  • The purpose of this consultancy is to support all facets of the Trade Hub’s communications efforts. Ideally, the consultant would be based in Dakar, Senegal, and may work virtually.

Task to be Performed:
The consultant will be expected to:

  • Write, and edit published marketing on the Trade Hub activities, partnerships, grants, and industry, such as blog articles, promotional content, success stories, website content, and press releases to be made available through various channels.
  • Translate published content from English to French-English where necessary.
  • Seek input from several actors and thought leaders at different levels of the organization to produce optimal, thoughtful, and industry-leading publications that will further promote the Trade Hub objectives
  • Work in close collaboration with the Communication unit and technical team to identify great story ideas, develop, draft, and make them understandable and accessible through different communication channels
  • Assist the communications team with administrative tasks such as updating spreadsheets related to tracking grantees, editing and organizing files, and updating the Trade Hub’s website.
  • Assist in coordinating webinars and events in Senegal or any francophone countries, including Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo, Benin, and Mali.
  • Write and edit press releases, fact sheets, success stories, grantee summaries, and other materials needed for the work of the Trade Hub, Trade Hub’s grantees, USAID, and U.S. government partners. These materials may be published on media outlets’ websites, the Trade Hub’s website, U.S. government partner websites, the Trade Hub’s project updates to USAID, and the Trade Hub’s quarterly newsletter.

Other Matters:

  • The consultant will report to the communications manager in Abuja, Nigeria.
  • Consultant may be expected to travel within Senegal and other countries to support event management and writing needs to document projects.
  • Consultant may be expected to work occasionally on weekends and evenings, to ensure on-time delivery of assignments.
  • While the consultant may work from their home office, the consultant will be expected to meet in person with other Trade Hub, as needed, to discuss project deliverables.

Desired Qualifications

  • This position requires a High School Diploma in Communication and Journalism / Mass Communication.
  • BA / BSc Degree desired
  • 5 – 10 years work experience.
  • Excellent English and French reading, writing, and editing skills.
  • An ability to present concepts and results in a clear and concise format for professional audiences.
  • Experience or the ability to format text and photos in Word documents, following a template.
  • Experience coordinating virtual and in-person events.
  • Excellent research and story-developing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • At least three years of professional work experience, preferably within a communications-related role.
  • Experience working remotely
  • Experience working with diverse partners
  • Interest in international development and trade and investment.
