Helen Keller International (HKI), established in 1915, is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to saving the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Headquartered in New York City, HKI currently conducts programs in 21 countries in Africa and Asia, as well as in the United States.

HKI implements integrated package of cost-effective interventions that are proven to improve maternal and child nutrition. HKI supports policies and programs on food fortification, vitamin A supplementation, infant and young child feeding, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, community-based management of acute malnutrition and prevention and treatment of neglected tropical diseases. At the core of HKI’s programs is advocacy and social behavior change communication to various stakeholders. HKI also undertakes cutting-edge research to influence policy decisions and inform program quality.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Social and Behavioral Change Communications (SBCC) Advisor

Location: Abuja

Scope of the Position

  • The Social and Behavioral Change Communications (SBCC) Advisor will provide strategic communications consultation and guidance to the project.
  • He/She will plan, drive, implement, monitor, and measure the results of communications plans to advance project goals, strategic plan, and business objectives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support strategy planning and execution for communication plans and programs, major organizational campaigns and initiatives related to media relations, crisis communication, organizational communication, community relations, social media, and executive communication.
  • Work with key internal role-players to brainstorm content ideas, in line with the company’s strategy and in support of various brand initiatives.
  • Ensure the organizational voice and narrative, and Mission, Vision, and Values, including the culture and heritage of founding organizations, are present in all communication efforts.
  • Develop and implement a communication strategy that includes media outreach and social media content creation.
  • Acquire and maintain a detailed knowledge of the company’s policies, principles, and strategies, and to keep up to date with relevant developments.
  • Support and evaluate the results of communication campaigns with the team.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master’s or Higher Degree in Communication Arts is an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 8 to 10 years in implementing and/or managing SBCC/Nutrition/Public Health programs in humanitarian or international development settings.
  • Strong skills in the field of communications, media relations, social media, digital, news, and/or staff engagement communications activities.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the communications discipline along with critical thinking and strategic counseling skills.
  • Demonstrates strong writing, editing, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactively seeks opportunities to build and improve positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Understands and acts independently to drive functional strategies forward to advance the project mission, strategic plan, and business goals.
  • Strong networking and representational skills. Builds credibility with peers and internal stakeholders.
  • Assesses opportunities for improvements and demonstrates willingness and ability to adapt to change.
  • Able to communicate complex issues in a concise, accessible, and engaging manner.
  • Ability to meet deadlines with strong attention to consistency, detail, and quality.
  • Conversant with the use of Microsoft Office Applications – MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Should possess a background in Communication Arts or any other Social Sciences
  • Solid understanding of the principles and key elements of social & behavioral change communication across health, nutrition, and Environmental Health programming.
  • Experience in technical tools and materials development and research in relation to Nutrition and Public health behavior change is highly desired.
  • Experience in strategy development and working across sectors or disciplines is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated expertise in transforming harmful gender norms through SBCC approaches and commitment to achieving gender equality.
  • Demonstrated expertise in program design, monitoring, and evaluation, with the ability to turn concepts and strategy into measurable action. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to renewing and maintaining currency with best practices.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to travel regularly to the project states (Bauchi, Kebbi, Ebonyi, FCT and Sokoto) as needed.
