Re-advertised Terms of Reference (ToR) for Gender and Language Expert – AI Bias Reduction & Inclusive Data Generation Engine At AfriLabs

AI BRIDGE (AI Bias Reduction & Inclusive Data Generation Engine) is a multi-phase initiative to reduce gender bias in AI models by:

  • Developing gender-sensitive AI tools in 17 African languages
  • Enabling inclusive, fair datasets through automated and human-in-the-loop sanitization processes

Partners:

  • AfriLabs: Africa’s largest innovation hub network across 53 countries
  • Gates Foundation: Focus on gender-sensitive digital inclusion
  • Meta: Supports Llama Impact Grants for open-source AI use

Objectives of Phase 2

  1. Detect & mitigate gender bias in datasets used for AI/LLMs
  2. Provide tools to rewrite biased content without losing meaning
  3. Promote inclusive AI for African linguistic and cultural contexts
  4. Deliver model-agnostic pipelines via open APIs

Methodology Overview

  1. Data Ingestion: Curate diverse datasets in African languages
  2. Bias Detection: Use hybrid methods (rules + ML) to flag bias
  3. Content Analysis: Contextual tagging & classification
  4. Content Sanitization: Transformer models + controlled vocabulary
  5. Human-in-the-loop Validation: Gender and language expert reviews
  6. Finalization: Version control, documentation, traceability
  7. Continuous Learning: Feedback integration into model updates

Role: Gender & Language Expert (Consultant)

Scope of Work:

  • Technical Advisory: Guide teams on gender bias detection/sanitization in 17 languages
  • Review AI Outputs: Flag and advise on gender bias and cultural sensitivity
  • Develop Guidelines: Co-create evaluation checklists and best practices
  • Mentorship: Offer virtual capacity-building sessions and 1-on-1/team mentoring
  • Documentation: Produce a final report with insights and future recommendations

Required Qualifications

General:

  • Gender data analysis expertise (esp. in digital/AI contexts)
  • Strong cultural & contextual competence in African societies

Specialized (at least 2 of the following):

  • AI & ML knowledge (Llama/open-source AI a plus)
  • Gender-sensitive project experience
  • Deep understanding of African linguistic diversity
  • Product or business development experience
  • Design thinking and/or prototyping skills
