Job Title: Protection Assistant, Legal

Location: Borno

About the Job

  • Strengthening community-based protection mechanisms through enhanced access to justice.
  • The intervention will also complement other proposed projects to ensure that survivors are able to access Legal justice, including Traditional and Religious laws, as well as recognizes, and adequately responds to Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG)

Main Responsibilities
The Protection Assistant legal will be mainly responsible for the following:

  • Supervising and monitoring the activities of the 12 paralegals who will be in charge of conducting community engagement sessions on available legal frameworks through weekly legal information clinics at the community level.
  • Support the training of 12 paralegals to lead community engagements on access to Justice for GBV survivors. The paralegals will be referred by the federation of women lawyers in Nigeria, Borno chapter who have a database of paralegals, that interested actors can work with, to enhance access to legal information for hard-to-reach communities.
  • Train 50 community leaders and opinion leaders on Alternative Dispute resolution in which GBV laws Community leaders, are the custodians of culture and drivers of change in every community.
  • Support the training of 30 law enforcement agents on GBV law, PSEA and access to legal justice for survivors of GBV Safety, and security actors in conflict affected areas are always being swapped from time to time.
  • Facilitate the Establishment of 2 gender reporting desks at the police station. CARE will also strengthen existing or setting up, training and supporting 2 Gender reporting desks within police stations, to strengthen access to legal assistance and access to justice for survivors of GBV.
  • Being responsible for assessment, counseling both at the individual and group level as the situation demands.
  • Guaranteeing that all work with GBV survivors is confidential and ethical practices are observed.
  • Documenting client data accurately, ensuring safety and confidentiality are practiced.
  • Contributing to the interpretation of information, working with GBV officer to disseminate information and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Preparing weekly, monthly and bi-annual reports for all legal related activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law or other Social Science related field.
  • Two years’ experience in providing legal services in an emergency humanitarian context.

Skills:

  • Good team player: the ability to take direction and work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to interact in a professional way, including community members, clients, and partners.
  • The candidate should be able to complete required reporting and documentation within the set deadlines.
  • Able to keep and sustain confidentiality.
  • Experience working in Northern Borno is highly desirable.
  • Communication in Kanuri and Hausa language is highly desirable.
  • A critical thinker with outstanding interpersonal skills.
