How to Write a Cover Letter for an NGO Job in Nigeria

A Cover Letter Is Not a Second CV

Your cover letter has one job: explain why this role, this organisation, and your experience belong together. It should not repeat every line of your CV or tell your entire life story. A recruiter should be able to read it in about a minute and understand what you can contribute.

Begin With the Vacancy

Read the job description first. Note the programme area, location, core duties, skills, and values the employer emphasises. Then choose two or three pieces of experience that directly support the application. UNDP advises applicants to write a separate, relevant cover letter for each position.

Use a Simple Four-Part Structure

Keep the letter to one page. A practical structure is:

  • Opening: name the role and state your strongest relevant fit.
  • Evidence: show one or two relevant examples from work, NYSC, volunteering, or study.
  • Motivation: explain why the organisation’s work matters to you.
  • Closing: restate your interest and invite consideration.

Make the Opening Specific

Avoid “I am writing to apply for any available vacancy.” Name the position and give one reason you are a credible candidate. For example: “I am applying for the Project Assistant role because my experience supporting community outreach, activity records, and volunteer coordination aligns closely with the project’s field-delivery needs.”

Show Evidence, Not Adjectives

Do not say you are hardworking, passionate, and result-oriented without proof. Replace adjectives with one clear example. Mention a project, a responsibility, a tool you used, or a result you helped achieve.

Explain Why the Organisation

A good cover letter shows that you understand the organisation’s work. Refer briefly to the programme area or approach that connects to your experience. Do not copy a paragraph from the organisation’s website; use your own words.

Common Mistakes

A generic letter, spelling the organisation’s name wrongly, repeating the CV, writing more than one page, or making claims you cannot support will weaken an otherwise strong application.

Final Check

Use a clear file name, proofread aloud, and submit in the format requested. Then keep a copy of the job description so you can prepare properly if you are invited for interview.
