Global Citizen is a movement of engaged citizens who are using their collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030. On our platform, Global Citizens learn about the systemic causes of extreme poverty, take action on those issues, and earn rewards for their actions – as part of a global community committed to lasting change. Our mission is to build a movement of 100MM Global Citizens whose actions will help achieve our vision of a world without extreme poverty by 2030.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Manager, Policy and Government Relation

Location: Lagos
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Duration: One-year contract (40 Hours / week commitment) with a possibility of an extension.

Description

  • Since its inception, Global Citizen has leveraged the power of artists, governments, corporations, philanthropists, and civil society to achieve one common goal: ending extreme poverty. In the last decade, Global Citizen has mobilized $48.4B USD towards this goal. Of this, over $22.6B USD has already been disbursed, impacting the lives of more than 880M people.
  • In 2022, Global Citizen will be undertaking a coordinated advocacy campaign. The campaign will seek to mobilize new resources and policy commitments in line with three priority areas:
    • Bring about system change to end the current and prepare better for future pandemics; ensure an equitable recovery everywhere and provide long term financing for sustainable development
    • Fight climate change
    • Empower adolescent girls
  • Citizen-led advocacy is crucial to achieving the above and Global Citizen aims to support the protection of civic space more in 2022. The campaign will include continued advocacy work with key governments, international organizations, the private sector, and other strategic actors as well as the specific tent pole moments we will leverage to bring new commitments over the line.

Responsibilities
The Manager for Policy, Government Relations responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identify and establish partnership opportunities with key West African and Nigeria Federal, State, and Local governments including around:
    • Vaccine Distribution Strategy and Access/availability
    • Resume Learning / Education and SRHR
    • Equity and Justice, including women and girls, gender equality and marginalized groups
    • Environment/Climate Change
    • Civic space, citizen engagement.
    • Engagement with the Private Sector
    • ECOWAS / AU / other national and regional organizations
  • Secure the official endorsement of Nigeria and another government from the region for Global Citizens policy direction and campaign activities
  • Facilitate high-level participation of Government officials, ideally leaders’ level, in GC tentpole moments, events, and potentially other opportunities to specific policy and/or funding outcomes, including securing use of official logo and quotes for use in the campaign.
  • Secure new policy and/ or financial commitments from West Africa and Nigeria in line with Global Citizen’s plan. Pursue new relationships and opportunities with stakeholders in line with Global Citizen’s strategy, including with the private sector, artist, talent, philanthropic organisations, and civil society in order to strengthen Global Citizen’s presence and relevance in the markets ahead.
  • Develop relationships with at least 3 individuals from the region (former Heads of State, high-level politicians, etc.) who could support the Global Citizen policy objectives, including serving as judges for the Global Citizen Prize in 2022.
  • Support Global Citizen Government Relations, Policy, and Business Development Teams with country and regional analysis, horizon scanning, research, and implementation, as appropriate.
  • Coordinate GC’s efforts, in partnership with external allies, to secure new charitable giving from foundations, philanthropists, and corporate organizations.
  • Work with grassroots NGOs and activists to amplify GC work in West Africa and Nigeria to support our policy objectives

Requirements
Required Skill and Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience that includes a combination of: Policy and Government relations (Nigerian government, NGO, public/private sector administration experience preferable),
  • Experience developing campaigns from concept through execution
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meet tight deadlines and stay organized to execute campaigns
  • Collaborative style and strong work ethic
  • Experience working in a dynamic team environment
  • Deep experience in coordinating with multiple teams across multiple partnerships
  • Able to facilitate strategic and tactical decision-making on a day-to-day basis
  • Demonstrated interest in the international development sector
  • Has shown a demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with key Nigerian and West African policymakers and staff around support for global issues
  • Working knowledge of French or another language of the region is an asset
  • Preferred: Online campaigning/organizing with a focus on recruitment and engagement, Rapid response email and social media campaigning, Offline grassroots organizing or events coordination experience
