HYGIENE PROMOTION OFFICER PULKA
Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno State, MI is currently active in the WASH sector for improving the lives of both the IDP population as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. They include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines, and hygiene promotion. Malteser International thereby applies a participatory, gender-sensitive, and inclusive approach.
In support of our work in Pulka, Borno State Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for a motivated Hygiene promotion officer (m/f/d) – National position.
Position Objectives:
Under the direct supervision of the Area Coordinator Pulka, the Hygiene Promotion Officer will be responsible for the overall planning, participation and implementation of all hygiene promotion activities, collecting data, and developing reports as well as building relationships with local partners and communities.
The Hygiene promotion officer ensures the implementation of all project activities as well as compliance with Malteser International and donor guidelines. Furthermore, the Hygiene Promotion Officer is responsible for ensuring close coordination of daily hygiene promotion activities such as house-to-house and group sessions, campaigns, community mobilization, and meetings with community leaders and hygiene promotion volunteers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan, organize, and coordinate weekly hygiene promotion activities from a monthly plan.
- Identify, select, and assist in training hygiene promotion volunteers using different approaches (CHAST and PHAST).
- Supervise daily hygiene promotion sessions conducted by hygiene promotion volunteers.
- Assist in Planning, coordinating, and conducting campaigns, focus group discussions, and hygiene global events, as well as house-to-house visits to monitor hygiene practices.
- Design IEC (information Education and communication) materials for hygiene promotion volunteers
- Formulate a child hygiene club under Children Hygiene and Sanitation Training (CHAST) with volunteers and conduct CHAST Sessions.
- Assist in the implementation of Participatory hygiene and sanitation approaches such as Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS)
- Assist in the selection of beneficiaries, and distribution of hygiene/dignity kits to beneficiaries.
- Document all hygiene promotion activities and establish a good filling system.
- Ensure gender mainstreaming during the implementation of any hygiene promotion activities.
Objective 2: Collect Data and Develop Reports including Compliance with Malteser International Guidelines.
- Develop a database to track hygiene promotion data and input the data every week.
- Collect the hygiene promotion data prepare weekly field activity reports and submit them to the senior hygiene promotion officer.
- Participate in the Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP) Survey adapted to hygiene promotion.
- Apply the methodologies defined for the sensitizing sessions on hygiene promotion and water management and ensure that the volunteer is respecting them.
- Monitor the progress of hygiene promotion activities and record the effect or impact of the sensitizing sessions.
- Propose possible improvements and adaptations of the approach.
Objective 3: Build a Relationship with Local Partners and Community
- Exchange information and collaborate with the internal WaSH officers.
- Exchange information with stakeholders such as Volunteers, community leaders, and other WaSH partners
- Attending Camp Coordination meeting
- Maintain positive relationships with all the stakeholders.
General
- Assist the monitoring and evaluation team in conducting the registration of beneficiaries, post-distribution monitoring, and baseline, and end-line surveys.
- Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Participate in office work with colleagues as a good team player.
- Be an active role model for the target population, by adhering to healthy personal behavior and lifestyle.
- Maintain a non-judgmental and supportive attitude towards colleagues and beneficiaries regardless of their background, political affiliation, or religion.
- Take responsibility for representing Malteser International towards the local population, authorities, and other (I)NGOs
- Adhere to and respect Malteser International guidelines and codes.
- Carry out additional tasks as required by the supervisor as the tasks and responsibilities defined in this job description are non-exhaustive and can evolve depending on the organization’s needs
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Minimum of BSc or National Diploma Certificate related to hygiene promotion courses with at least 2 years’ experience working as a hygiene promotion or public health promotion
- Experience working in an international organization environment.
- Good command of the English Language is highly desirable.
- Previous experience working in complex and volatile contexts.
- Ability to work under pressure and be flexible.
- Proven integrity and good character and good knowledge of Local context and preferably residing in the position location.
Conditions:
- Start date: January 2023

- Duration of contract: 12 months
