The People’s Project for Social and Climate Justice is a grassroots, community-led nonprofit committed to advancing human prosperity, social equity, and climate justice. We work at the intersection of health, education, governance, and environmental justice through evidence-based programs, research, advocacy, and partnerships to dismantle systemic inequities and create sustainable, inclusive communities. Job Title: Finance Officer
Location: Hybrid – Abuja, Nigeria (with occasional travel)
Reports to: Director of Operations / Chief Executive Officer

Position Summary
The Finance Officer is a key member of The People’s Project team, responsible for strengthening and maintaining the organization’s financial management systems, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, and supporting overall sustainability through sound financial planning and resource mobilization. This role oversees the full spectrum of financial duties, including internal audits, procurement, payments, grant management, and preparation of audited financial statements in collaboration with external auditors. The Finance Officer also supports strategic resource mobilization by contributing to proposal budgets and financial reporting for donors.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management, Accounting, and Reporting
- Oversee and manage day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate record-keeping, reconciliations, and reporting.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and management accounts for internal use, donors, and regulatory agencies.
- Develop and monitor organizational and project budgets, forecasts, and cash flow statements to ensure financial sustainability.
- Ensure all financial transactions comply with internal policies, donor agreements, and national regulations.
- Maintain all statutory filings related to taxes, pensions, and other financial obligations.
Resource Mobilization and Proposal Development
- Support the Programs and Partnerships teams in developing project budgets for funding proposals.
- Provide financial insights, cost analysis, and sustainability inputs for resource mobilization strategies.
- Manage donor reporting processes, ensuring alignment with funding agreements and organizational goals.
- Monitor grant budgets and expenditures, flagging risks and variances promptly.
Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management
- Establish and manage internal audit processes to ensure compliance, prevent fraud, and strengthen financial controls.
- Prepare for and coordinate all external audits, ensuring timely provision of accurate financial documentation.
- Address and implement audit recommendations in collaboration with management.
- Identify financial risks and provide mitigation strategies to management and the Board.
- Serve as the focal point for both internal and external auditors.
Payment Systems and Financial Controls
- Develop and manage robust payment structures and processes, ensuring timely, accurate, and transparent transactions.
- Oversee payroll processing, including tax and pension compliance.
- Maintain internal control systems, approvals, and documentation standards to protect organizational resources.
- Manage banking relationships and ensure appropriate cash management practices.
Procurement and Asset Management
- Oversee procurement processes in accordance with organizational policies and donor requirements.
- Maintain an up-to-date fixed assets register and ensure assets are properly safeguarded and utilized.
- Develop and maintain vendor relationships and conduct due diligence on suppliers and service providers.
- Ensure all procurement activities demonstrate value for money, fairness, and transparency.
Capacity Building and Organizational Strengthening
- Build the financial capacity of staff and project partners through training on financial policies, grant management, and compliance.
- Work closely with program and operations teams to strengthen financial literacy across the organization.
- Contribute to the development and periodic review of financial policies, systems, and tools.
Required Competencies & Attributes
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian accounting standards, nonprofit financial management, and donor compliance.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and risk management skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and integrity.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field (Master’s Degree or recognized accounting certification such as ACA, ACCA is highly desirable).
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in financial management within nonprofit or development sectors.
- Demonstrated experience in donor-funded project financial management, reporting, and compliance (e.g., USAID, FCDO, UNICEF, EU).
- Experience in procurement, payroll management, internal controls, and external audit coordination.
- Previous experience supporting resource mobilization through proposal budgeting is an advantage.
