Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia – The MRC Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of two research units established in sub- Saharan Africa by the Medical Research Council UK and is the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM’s single largest investment in medical research in a low and middle income country. MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM represents a unique concentration of scientific expertise and high quality research platforms in the West African region.

Accountability :The post-holder is accountable to the EDI Manager.
Responsibilities
- The EDI Officer will work closely with the EDI Manager and internal stakeholders, including the EDI Committee, Wellbeing Committee, Anti-bullying and harassment advisers, psychosocial first aiders, etc, to implement the EDI initiatives and ensure the EDI vision is met.
Purpose of the Role
- The EDI Officer will provide operational support to the EDI Manager and committees in the implementation of the EDI policy and strategic plan.
- The Officer provides hands-on support in the implementation of all EDI and wellbeing-related initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
The EDI Officer will be responsible for the following:
- Participate in EDI-related committees and working groups, preparing minutes, tracking actions, and following up with stakeholders.
- Assist in the delivery and coordination of EDI activities, training sessions, and awareness campaigns.
- Help organise and manage logistics for EDI events, workshops, and seminars.
- Support EDI-related surveys to inform EDI planning, policies, and reporting.
- Contribute to the development and dissemination of internal information materials to promote EDI principles.
- Support the report and support systems related to EDI
- Support the monitoring and evaluation of EDI initiatives and assist in compiling progress reports.
Relationships:
- The post holder will be a full-time MRCG Unit The Gambia member.
- The post holder will report to the EDI Manager.
Appraisals:
- Appraisals are held at least annually and are required for all members of the EDI Department.
Length of appointment:
- The appointment is up to 31st March 2027 in the first instance and is subject to a probation period of 3 months.
Person Specification
- University-level education in a relevant field (e.g. Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Sociology, Human Rights, Law, Psychology, Public Health, or related discipline).
- Demonstrated interest in Equality, diversity, and inclusivity.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Previous EDI related work experience is essential. Candidate should have basic work experience in EDI/Gender, Community Service/Development Studies, Administration, or another related field.
