Plan International was founded over 75 years ago with a mission to promote and protect the rights of children. The organisation was set up by British journalist John Langdon-Davies and refugee worker Eric Muggeridge in 1937, with the original aim to provide food, accommodation and education to children whose lives had been disrupted by the Spanish Civil War. Information about the Project
With support from Global Affairs Canada through Plan International Canada National office, Plan International Nigeria has implemented a 3-year intervention (the EiC project) that address a range of demand- and supply-side barriers to help restore the right to 12 years of education for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and adolescent girls, including pregnant girls, young mothers, and survivors in conflict-affected NE Nigeria. The ultimate outcome seeks to improve the realization of girl’s rights to inclusive, protective and gender-responsive quality education, in the conflict-affected states of Borno and Yobe in NE Nigeria. The project will create pathways to help out-of-school adolescent girls and boys return to learning via non-formal education programs and will support the most vulnerable adolescent girls to make the transition into school, between primary and junior secondary and then onwards to secondary schools.
It is expected that by the end of the project, vulnerable adolescent girls targeted by the project, including those with disabilities, will have:
- Increased access to safe, secure, quality, inclusive education,
- Benefitted from improved equitable and coordinated provision of innovative, safe, quality, gender-responsive and evidence-based formal and non-formal education, from primary to the end of secondary.
Projects took a two-pronged approach, working with:
- Girls, to build their agency, and their families and communities to reduce barriers to girls’ education such as harmful social norms and cost barriers
- Local and state education actors, to improve provision of quality formal and non-formal education so they are safer for girls and respond to girls’ needs, especially those who are internally displaced and out-of-school.
