Emergency Medical Coordinator M/F At Doctors Without Borders

Médecins Sans Frontières, an international humanitarian medical association founded in 1971, provides medical assistance to populations whose lives are threatened: primarily in cases of armed conflict, but also epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters, and even exclusion from healthcare.

In collaboration with the Emergency Unit, the Medical Coordinator defines and implements the medical-operational strategy for the emergency response. He/she is responsible for planning and coordinating all medical activities and resources. He/she may be deployed as a medical coordinator, medical focal point, or medical resource for exploratory missions; and may be deployed for emergency interventions managed by the Emergency Unit or emergency interventions managed by one of the regular units.

Main responsibilities:

  • Defines, monitors, and updates the medical strategy for emergency response, translating needs into a medical strategy that takes into account the realistic aspect, priorities, and resources needed to appropriately address the needs of identified populations. This includes the ability to quickly assess an emergency situation and propose creative but realistic operations and the ability to conduct epidemiological studies.
  • Guarantees the relevance and quality of medical interventions.
  • Acts as a leader in a multi-disciplinary team, able to engage a team in discussions and decision-making.
  • Continuously monitors the medical and humanitarian needs of the population.
  • Responsible for the supervision and monitoring of all medical aspects of operations.
  • In collaboration with the HR team, participates in the definition and planning of international and national medical teams.
  • In collaboration with the HR team, defines and implements the health and safety policy for the national and international teams of the mission.
  • Defines other necessary resources (pharmacy and medical equipment, in collaboration with the pharmacy and logistics teams), procedures and protocols. Ensures the preparation of medical orders with the Pharmacist and the logistician and submits purchase requests to headquarters. Is responsible for the proper management of the pharmacy (in collaboration with the coordinating pharmacist).
  • Produces reports on the evolution of activities from a medical perspective, including analyses of MSF medical data and other health actors as well as epidemiological data. Adapts the proposed strategy based on the analysis of this data.
  • Responsible for the mission’s medical library. Informs the medical team of the tools/materials and support documents available to them. Ensures that the medical documents available are up to date.
  • In collaboration with the HR team, he/she is involved in the development of medical staff through training opportunities, objective monitoring and evaluations. Identifies potential candidates to follow.
  • Represents MSF with health authorities, up to the Ministry of Health level. Creates the network with all relevant actors (other MSF, UN, NGOs, local organizations, donors, authorities, universities and researchers) with the aim of producing a detailed analysis of the medical-humanitarian situation, strengthening the impact of medical interventions and being an advocate through our medical operations.

Desired profile
Experience

  • Essential, be validated as an MSF Medical Coordinator and have at least one year of experience in a similar position with MSF and field experience with MSF and/or other NGOs.
  • Experience in different types of mission (epidemic, conflict, natural disaster, population displacement)
  • Experience in an emergency context

  • Ability to perform medical assessments in any type of context and deduce action proposals.

  • French and English B2 minimum
  • Knowledge of Arabic desirable
  • Knowledge of other languages ​​such as Spanish is a plus

Contractual conditions

  • Field position with visits to headquarters in Paris.
  • Full-time fixed-term contract (12 months, 100%) with possible extension.
  • Gross salary according to the MSF field scale, level 14
  • Special benefits, emergency contract
  • Mutual and Per Diem in the countries of intervention and at headquarters according to the regulations in force.
  • Ideal start date: June 1, 2025
