Chen Teen & Youth Development Initiative (CTYDI) is a non-governmental charitable organization based in Abuja, poised to build a purpose-driven generation of young people empowered and motivated to impact the society in which they live through the provision of wholesome alternatives. CTYDI works with relevant governmental and nongovernmental stakeholders to address the physical, social, spiritual and mental barriers to self-actualization and fulfilment of purpose among teenagers and youths.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Data Collector

Location: Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Temporary

Job Description

  • Despite the known impact of substance use and misuse on mental and social well-being of young people and the huge burden it constitutes in Nigeria according to the 2018 UNDOC survey on Drug Use in Nigeria, there is limited data on drug and substance use and misuse that is representative of students in the FCT.
  • CTYDI is conducting an FCT-wide study on alcohol, drugs and tobacco use among secondary school students, in collaboration with the Gender, Adolescent School Health and Elderly Care (GASHE) Division, FMOH and the FCT Secondary Education Board. We are therefore recruiting experienced research assistants for the data collection process.

Scope of Work

  • Survey data collection will be done over five working days across selected secondary schools in the six FCT area councils.
  • The Research Assistant will work in teams to visit and collect data from at least two schools per day, and will be expected to understand and confidently explain the aim, objectives and benefits of the survey.
  • S/he would ensure that participation in the survey is voluntary and ensure full compliance with the study protocol.
  • S/he would also upload all collected data on a daily basis and promptly raise any concerns to the supervisors and Principal Investigators for action.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in in-class and field training and orientation related to the survey in order to gain skills required for the position’s responsibilities such as: confidential data collection, obtaining informed consent, interviewing.
  • Identify and establish contact with relevant authorities to introduce self, discuss the survey, and secure required materials.
  • Collect data from survey respondents using provided tools and following the targets and schedule outlined in the work plan.
  • Respond to questions that participants may have about the survey.
  • Report daily to the supervisor on issues encountered during data collection, return of completed questionnaires, and progress of data collection.
  • Ensure collected data is handled in a confidential manner and kept physically secure at all times.
  • Enter data from each questionnaire into the central database using provided electronic form and ensuring that all data points are accurately inputted and uploaded.
  • Participate in debriefings and evaluations as may be required throughout the data collection process, respond promptly to questions and feedback from the data analyst and other survey team members.

Requirements

  • Should have at least an OND in any subject.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write English, with clear written communication skills.
  • Must have access to a smartphone and be comfortable with using electronic forms for data entry
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be reliable, able to work in a team and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must attend the in-class and field training sessions and be willing to learn.
  • Should have exceptional time management skills.
  • Willing to sign a Confidentiality Agreement.
  • Previous experience conducting research or data collection, and previous experience working with children and young adults will be assets.
