Global Village Healthcare Initiative for Africa (GHIV Africa) is a non-governmental, non-for-profit humanitarian/Developmental organization which started in 2014. We deliver assistance to affected populations before, during and after crisis situations.
GHIV Africa was founded to mitigate the health deficit in Africa and to provide all forms of assistance leading to improved quality of life. The organization is equally poised to support the delivery of healthcare services at the doorsteps of every African village by bridging the gap between primary health care delivery and tertiary health care services through a robust referral system.
Position Title: Consultant for Rapid Gender Analysis (RGA)
Location: Borno State, Nigeria

1. Background and Context
Borno State, Nigeria, has faced multiple humanitarian crises, including armed conflicts and natural disasters such as recent floods. These floods have caused large-scale displacement and disproportionately affected vulnerable populations in three key IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps. To ensure a gender-responsive humanitarian response, there is a need for a Rapid Gender Analysis (RGA) to understand the differentiated needs, vulnerabilities, and coping strategies of flood-affected populations.
The consultant will support the completion of the RGA by facilitating Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and analyzing both primary data and community insights, to identify specific gender-based needs and risks that will guide humanitarian programming.
2. Duties and Responsibilities
A. Data Review and Analysis
- Review and analyze existing primary data collected from three IDP camps, with a focus on gender differences and trends.
- Identify gaps in the data and ensure that gender-specific needs and protection risks are adequately addressed.
B. Facilitation of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs)
- Develop FGD guides tailored to capture gender-specific dynamics within the camps.
- Facilitate inclusive FGDs with men, women, adolescent boys and girls, elderly individuals, and people with disabilities, ensuring that discussions are gender-sensitive and culturally appropriate.
- Validate and deepen insights from the collected data, focusing on gender roles, responsibilities, protection risks, and coping mechanisms.
- Ensure that FGDs reflect diverse perspectives and intersecting vulnerabilities across the affected population.
C. Gender-Specific Needs and Risk Assessment
- Conduct a gender-sensitive analysis to identify specific vulnerabilities and protection risks faced by different gender groups.
- Assess gender-based violence (GBV) risks, particularly for women-headed households and individuals with disabilities.
- Analyze the shifting gender roles and their impact on livelihood activities, decision-making, and access to essential services in the camps.
D. Development of Recommendations
- Based on the data collected, provide targeted recommendations for enhancing gender-responsive interventions in the camps.
- Suggest actionable strategies for addressing gender-based protection risks, improving access to services, and ensuring equitable resource allocation in the humanitarian response.
E. Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare and submit an Inception Report outlining the methodology, work plan, and approach for FGDs.
- Develop an FGD Report detailing the outcomes, insights, and challenges identified during the FGDs.
- Prepare a final Rapid Gender Analysis Report, including a comprehensive overview of gender-specific impacts, power dynamics, roles and responsibilities, decision-making processes, protection risks, and recommendations for gender-sensitive humanitarian programming.
3. Key Deliverables
- Inception Report: Submitted within 3 days of the consultancy start date, including methodology, work plan, and FGD guides.
- FGD Report: Submitted within 10 days of the consultancy start date, covering insights and gender-based challenges identified in the FGDs.
- Rapid Gender Analysis Report: Submitted within 20 days, providing an in-depth analysis of the gender-specific impacts of the floods, power dynamics, roles, responsibilities, risks, and practical recommendations.
4. Timeframe
- Inception Report: Within 3 days of commencement.
- FGD Facilitation and Reporting: Within 10 days of commencement.
- Draft RGA Report: Within 15 days of commencement.
- Final RGA Report: Within 20 days of commencement.
5. Required Qualifications and Experience
- Advanced degree in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Development Studies, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in gender analysis, humanitarian programming, or social research, preferably in displacement or crisis settings.
- Proven experience in facilitating FGDs with diverse, vulnerable groups, including women, men, adolescents, and people with disabilities.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize data into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Understanding of gender issues in humanitarian settings, particularly in North-East Nigeria.
- Fluency in English and Hausa; knowledge of Kanuri is an added advantage.
6. Management and Reporting
- The consultant will report directly to UN Women, in coordination with the Gender Technical Team (GTT).
- Regular updates will be provided to GHIV Africa and the Gender Technical Team.
