Position Title: Medical Assistant
Location: Maiduguri/Jere, Nigeria (with field visits to other locations)
Duration: 6 Months (renewable based on funding)
Start Date: As soon as possible
Reporting to: Medical Officer
About the Role
The MENTOR Initiative, a specialist INGO focusing on tropical disease control, partners with the Borno State Ministry of Health to support lifesaving health services, particularly in vector-borne disease control. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Medical Assistant for our Emergency Response Program in Borno State. The role involves providing critical health services to vulnerable communities.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- Certification: Qualified Emergency Medical Technician or equivalent.
- Experience:
- Background in primary healthcare systems, including community case management, malaria, and vector-borne disease control in Nigeria.
- Experience in organizing and managing medicines for mobile clinics and outreach consultations.
- Familiarity with clinical protocols and drug dispensing practices, including prescription transcribing, patient education, monitoring, and reporting.
- Prior experience in dispensing medications and supplies in primary care settings.
- Previous experience with INGOs is preferred.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English and Kanuri is required. Knowledge of Hausa is an advantage.
- Other Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and management skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Responsibilities
1. Provision of Free Curative Health Consultations
- Prepare necessary drugs, materials, and equipment for mobile clinics.
- Adhere to basic hygiene and medical protocols during consultations.
- Actively participate in triage and perform consultations in alignment with MENTOR protocols.
- Manage emergency cases, complete patient registration forms, and investigate health events or potential outbreaks.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure respectful, dignified treatment.
2. Admission and Follow-Up in OTP Program
- Screen children (ages 6-59 months) using MUAC, H/W, and edema assessments.
- Admit new cases to the OTP program following national nutrition protocols and provide systematic treatment for SAM cases.
- Conduct weekly follow-ups, adjust RUTF doses, and discharge cases per protocol.
- Refer complicated SAM cases to the appropriate Stabilization Center.
3. Data Collection, Computerization, and Analysis
- Collect daily consultation data and participate in periodic computerization and analysis of medical data.
4. Reporting and Meeting Attendance
- Submit weekly activity reports to the team leader.
- Participate proactively in MENTOR internal meetings and training sessions.
5. Additional Responsibilities
- Offer suggestions to improve mobile clinic operations.
- Assist with vehicle loading/unloading and mobile clinic setup.
- Participate in weekly physical inventory of the mobile clinic pharmacy.
- Adapt to changes and assist in other duties as requested by the team leader.
- Report any security concerns immediately to the security focal point.
