WASH Program Coordinator At Grow Strong Foundation (GSF)

Grow Strong Foundation (GSF) is a national non-governmental organization working to strengthen community resilience through integrated programs in Protection, Peacebuilding, Health, Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL), WASH, and Climate Change across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States.

In line with its 2025–2026 strategic expansion, GSF is establishing a WASH Unit to enhance access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services among conflict-affected and vulnerable communities in Borno State. The WASH Program Coordinator will provide technical leadership, coordination, and resource mobilization to operationalize and scale WASH interventions.

Position Title: WASH Program Coordinator
Reports To: Head of Programs 
Duty Station: Maiduguri, Borno State (with regular travel to field LGAs: Jere, Konduga, and MMC)
Contract Type: Full-time
Start Date: December 2025

Purpose:

The WASH Program Coordinator will lead the establishment and implementation of GSF’s WASH Unit, ensuring quality program design, effective coordination, donor compliance, and integration with other thematic sectors (Health, Nutrition, FSL, Protection, Climate Change, and Peace building).

This role will represent GSF in state-level WASH sector coordination forums, lead proposal development, and oversee program implementation across target LGAs.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Program Leadership and Management
   1. Lead the establishment of the WASH Unit under GSF’s Programs Directorate.
   1. Design and implement WASH projects that improve access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
   1. Supervise field staff and volunteers, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of project activities.
   1. Develop annual workplans, budgets, and performance frameworks for WASH programs.
   1. Conduct regular field monitoring and provide technical support to implementing teams.
2. Technical and Strategic Support
   1. Provide technical guidance on WASH infrastructure (boreholes, latrines, water quality testing, and waste management).
   1. Integrate WASH with Health, Nutrition, and FSL programs to promote multi-sectoral impact.
   1. Develop and disseminate behavior change communication (BCC) materials on hygiene promotion.
   1. Ensure all WASH interventions meet Sphere, WHO, and national humanitarian standards.
3. Resource Mobilization and Partnerships
   1. Lead WASH-related proposal development and donor engagement.
   1. Identify funding opportunities and partnerships with UN agencies (UNICEF, WHO, UNDP, WFP), INGOs and local NGOs.
   1. Support the development of concept notes, budgets and project narratives for submission to donors.
   1. Strengthen partnerships with government bodies such as BOSMOH, RUWASSA, Borno State Ministry of Environment, and PHCDA.
4. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
   1. Develop and implement project monitoring tools and reporting templates.
   1. Work with the M&E Unit to collect, analyze, and report WASH indicators (e.g., access to clean water, sanitation coverage, hygiene adoption rates).
   1. Submit monthly and quarterly progress reports to management and donors.
   1. Document best practices, lessons learned, and success stories.
5. Capacity Building and Team Development
   1. Train staff, community volunteers, and water committees on hygiene promotion and maintenance of WASH facilities.
   1. Build local ownership through community-based management systems for water and sanitation infrastructure.
   1. Support the development of WASH-related standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines.
6. Representation and Coordination
   1. Represent GSF at State and National WASH Sector Working Group meetings.
   1. Collaborate with partners in joint needs assessments and emergency responses.
   1. Ensure GSF’s WASH activities are aligned with the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) and Borno State Development Agenda.

Key Deliverables (First Year)

• Fully functional WASH Unit established by Q1 2026.
  • At least 3 active WASH projects implemented across GSF’s target LGAs.
  • Successful donor proposals submitted and funding secured.
  • Improved hygiene practices among 10,000 direct beneficiaries in IDP camps and host communities.
  • Quarterly reports submitted to WASH Sector and GSF management.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental or Civil Engineering, Water Resources Management, or related field.
• Master’s degree preferred.Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in WASH program management (NGO or UN context).Strong technical knowledge of WASH infrastructure, hygiene promotion, and behavior change.Proven experience in proposal writing, donor reporting, and team management.Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Familiarity with the humanitarian context of Northeast Nigeria, especially Borno State.
