About the Opportunity
AfriLabs, in partnership with the Gates Foundation and Meta, is seeking a Data Science Expert to support Phase 2 of the groundbreaking AI BRIDGE project. This initiative focuses on reducing gender bias and promoting inclusivity in AI systems across 17 African languages.
Following a successful hackathon involving 99 participants from 19 countries, 4 winning teams are now developing a gender sanitization engine. Your role as a consultant will be to mentor these teams in designing, refining, and scaling ethical, gender-aware NLP models and datasets.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide NLP and machine learning approaches for gender bias detection and rewriting.
- Support tagging schema design and tokenization tailored to African languages.
- Advise on automated and human-in-the-loop rewriting frameworks.
- Co-design ethical oversight protocols and validation tools.
- Recommend API structures and ensure modular, scalable pipeline architecture.
- Define performance metrics and continuous improvement strategies.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Data Science, Statistics, or related field.
- Proven experience with:
- NLP, bias detection, and ethical machine learning.
- Python libraries (Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib).
- Dataset versioning tools (Git, DVC, Jupyter).
- Multilingual or culturally diverse AI projects.

Evaluation Criteria
- Technical Proposal (65%): Relevance, qualifications, and submission completeness.
- Financial Proposal (35%): Cost-effectiveness, clarity, and flexibility.
