A global leader in AI and open-source technologies, Meta supports the Llama Impact Grants Program, which empowers innovators to build socially impactful solutions using open-source AI models like Llama. Its focus includes AI fairness, gender sensitivity, and support for linguistic and cultural diversity.
Together, Meta and the Gates Foundation have launched joint initiatives aimed at improving AI systems for African languages—ensuring these tools are inclusive, unbiased, and culturally relevant.
About the AI BRIDGE Initiative
The AI Bias Reduction & Inclusive Data Generation Engine (AI BRIDGE) is a landmark project designed to support the creation of gender-sensitive, linguistically inclusive AI tools for African communities. The program engages African innovators in developing AI models and datasets that are free from gender bias—particularly in underrepresented African languages.
What Has Been Achieved So Far
In Phase 1, AfriLabs hosted a pan-African hackathon involving 99 participants across 19 teams. These teams created prototype AI tools aimed at tackling gender bias. From these, eight winners were shortlisted to apply for the Llama Impact Grant. Now, four teams have advanced to Phase 2, where they will receive expert mentorship to develop a gender sanitization engine capable of analyzing and rewriting biased AI outputs in 17 African languages.
Project Objectives (Phase 2)
The core aim of Phase 2 is to develop model-agnostic, upstream tools that can detect and correct gender bias in AI datasets and outputs. Specifically, it will:
- Detect and mitigate gender bias in datasets used for training AI and large language models (LLMs).
- Provide tools for rewriting biased content without losing semantic meaning.
- Promote inclusive, equitable AI systems across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts in Africa.
These tools will enable the creation of AI systems that are more just, inclusive, and reflective of African realities.
Project Methodology
AI BRIDGE Phase 2 employs a structured, modular, and research-driven methodology. It blends automation with human expertise to ensure accuracy and contextual appropriateness. The process includes:
1. Data Ingestion
- Curate diverse datasets in targeted African languages
- Align data with gender-relevant use cases
2. Bias Detection
- Use hybrid methods (rules, ML classifiers, statistics) to flag biased content
- Highlight stereotypes and gender-exclusionary language
3. Content Analysis
- Apply contextual and metadata tagging to flagged data
- Cluster entries for review and rewriting
4. Content Sanitization
- Use transformer models to rewrite biased text while retaining meaning
- Apply controlled vocabulary for gender-sensitive alternatives
5. Human-in-the-Loop Validation
- Engage gender experts, linguists, and cultural advisors
- Review, accept, or override AI-suggested rewrites
6. Dataset Finalization
- Finalize clean datasets with version control and documentation
- Ensure traceability and ethical standards compliance
7. Feedback & Continuous Learning
- Analyze complex or rejected cases
- Refine rules and improve future model training
Purpose of the Assignment
AfriLabs is recruiting consultants to support Phase 2 of the AI BRIDGE initiative. These experts will work with participating teams to develop culturally aware, gender-sensitive AI tools in African languages.
Consultants will:
- Provide technical guidance throughout the development process
- Assess linguistic and gender bias in AI-generated outputs
- Help integrate inclusive and culturally relevant practices
- Support teams in creating bias detection and correction pipelines
- Ensure outputs meet the ethical standards of inclusive AI
The ideal consultant will:
- Understand AI and machine learning workflows
- Have experience in gender analysis and bias detection
- Be familiar with African sociolinguistic contexts
- Be passionate about inclusive innovation across the continent
