Job Title: Protection Officer

Section: Protection

Duration: 6 months 

Duty Station: Adamawa state (Madagali)

Reports to:  Project Manager

Start Date: IMMEDIATELY

1. Purpose of Assignment:  

The Protection Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety, dignity, and rights of affected populations, particularly those most vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, or neglect. Their role involves identifying protection risks, conducting assessments, and implementing activities that prevent and respond to violence, discrimination, and rights violations. They work closely with communities, humanitarian actors, and local authorities to promote protective environments, provide referrals to specialized services, and advocate for the inclusion of protection principles in all aspects of humanitarian programming.

Core Purpose: To lead the implementation of protection activities aimed at reducing vulnerability, preventing abuse, and promoting the safety, dignity, and rights of crisis-affected persons in line with humanitarian standards and organizational strategy.

2. Major duties and responsibilities:

1. Protection Programming & Implementation

•          Plan, implement, and monitor protection activities in line with project objectives, donor requirements, and international protection standards.

•          Conduct protection risk assessments and participate in needs assessments and community profiling.

•          Identify and analyze protection risks (including GBV, child protection, and exclusion risks) and propose appropriate interventions.

•          Implement case management services, including intake, assessment, referral, follow-up, and closure.

•          Conduct awareness sessions on rights, safety, gender equality, and available services.

•          Support the integration of protection principles (safety, dignity, non-discrimination, and accountability) into all sectoral programs.

2. Community-Based Protection & Engagement

•          Support the establishment and capacity-building of community protection structures such as Protection Committees or Community-Based Protection Networks (CBPNs).

•          Facilitate community dialogue sessions, focus group discussions, and feedback mechanisms to identify protection gaps.

•          Promote participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups in protection decision-making processes.

•          Ensure community-led initiatives are supported and documented for sustainability.

3. Case Management & Referral Mechanisms

•          Identify vulnerable individuals and groups requiring protection assistance or psychosocial support.

•          Provide confidential and survivor-centered case management for victims of violence and exploitation.

•          Coordinate referrals to service providers (legal, health, shelter, GBV, or child protection) and track service delivery.

•          Maintain updated and secure case management databases in accordance with data protection standards.

•          Ensure confidentiality, informed consent, and ethical data management at all times.

4. Coordination & Networking

•          Participate actively in Protection, Child Protection, and GBV Sub-Cluster meetings at state and local levels.

•          Coordinate closely with government agencies (e.g. NAPTIP, Ministry of Women Affairs, SEMA) and partner organizations.

•          Support advocacy on protection concerns and contribute to joint assessments and response planning.

•          Represent the organization in inter-agency coordination forums and protection working groups.

5. Capacity Building & Staff Support

•          Provide training and on-the-job coaching for community volunteers, caseworkers, and partners on protection principles, PSEA, and GBV mitigation.

•          Build internal capacity of program staff to mainstream protection across all projects.

•          Contribute to the development of training materials, IEC tools, and awareness campaigns.

•          Foster a culture of confidentiality, respect, and accountability among team members.

6. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning (MEAL)

•          Support the design and use of protection monitoring tools and data collection methodologies.

•          Document protection trends, gaps, and challenges for reporting and program improvement.

•          Participate in protection assessments and contribute to situation reports (SitReps) and donor updates.

•          Ensure protection data is analyzed and used to inform advocacy and programming.

•          Support accountability mechanisms, including feedback, complaints, and response systems for affected populations.

7. Reporting & Documentation

•          Prepare timely and accurate weekly, monthly, and quarterly activity reports.

•          Contribute to donor and internal reports by providing protection data, success stories, and field observations.

•          Maintain case files, registers, and referral databases in an organized and confidential manner.

•          Document lessons learned and best practices for program learning and visibility.

•          Actively promote Child Safe Guarding standards within Sorasun Foundation and among the children we serve.

•          Actively promote PSEA (prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse) standards within Sorasun Foundation and among beneficiaries.

•          Adhere to the Code of Conduct, maintain humanitarian principles and respect humanitarian law at all times.

•          Adhere to the Adamawa state Health Crae Development Agency Code of Conduct, for health at all times.

•          Adhere to the national protocols at all times

As applicable to this position, an individual must promote and encourage a culture of compliance and ethics throughout the organization and maintain a clear understanding of SORASUN and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards. If this is a supervisory position, one must set an example of ethical behavior through one’s own conduct and oversight of the work of others; ensure that those who report to you have sufficient knowledge and resources to follow the standards outlined in the Code of Conduct & Ethics; monitor compliance of the people you supervise; enforce the Code of Conduct & Ethics and SORASUN policies, including the Safeguarding Policy and the Protection from Harassment, Bullying and Sexual Misconduct in the Workplace Policy, consistently and fairly; support employees who in good faith raise questions or concerns

Safeguarding

It is all staff shared responsibility and obligation to safeguard and protect populations with whom we work, including adults who may be particularly vulnerable and children. This includes safeguarding from the following conduct by our staff or partners: sexual exploitation and abuse; exploitation, neglect, or abuse of children, adults at risk and any form of trafficking in persons. QUALIFICATION and COMPETENCIES (indicates the level of proficiency required for the job.) 

EDUCATION & OTHER SKILL: BSc in Social Science or any related course with training in Protection Mainstreaming, GBV, Child Protection, or Case Management.

WORK EXPERIENCE: 3 years of professional work experience in:

•          Experience working in conflict-affected areas or with IDPs/refugees is strongly preferred.

•          Proven experience with case management, community-based protection, and inter-agency coordination.

•          Familiarity with donor-funded projects

•          Sound knowledge of protection principles, human rights frameworks, and gender-based protection approaches.

•          Practical understanding of confidentiality, PSEA, and Do No Harm principles.

•          Ability to manage sensitive information securely and ethically.

•          Strong interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

•          Computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel, Kobo, ODK, or protection databases)

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Fluency in English and local working language of the duty station will be an asset.
