Project Associate – Civil Engineer WASH at International Organization for Migration (IOM)

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of project activities. 
  • Retrieve, compile, summarize, analyse, and present information/data on specific project topics.
  • Monitor budget; verify availability of funds; obtain necessary approval and update budget related information. 
  • Act as focal point for administrative coordination of project implementation, involving extensive liaison with diverse organizational units and external parties to initiate requests, obtain necessary clearances, process and follow-up on administrative actions, etc.
  • Draft status reports, identifying shortfalls in delivery, bring them to the attention of the supervisor and suggest remedial actions.
  • Draft correspondence on project issues; prepare and update reports, briefing notes, graphics, statistical tables, presentation and other forms of documentation. 
  • Respond to complex information requests and inquiries; set up and maintain files/records; organize meetings, workshops and training sessions; 
  • Participate in meetings and conferences; assist in coordinating implementation activities with local authorities, partners, United Nation agencies, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, donors and other stakeholders relevant to the project. 
  • Assist in monitoring work of implementing partners and report non-compliances to the supervisor.
  • Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience
Education:

  • School Diploma with five years of relevant experience; or,
  • Graduate Degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture or an equivalent combination of education, training & experience, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with 1 year of relevant experience

Experience:

  • Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, national/international institutions, United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations;
  • Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking and other vulnerable groups; and,
  • Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage. 

Skills:

  • Ability to conduct WASH needs assessments, including technical site appraisals and identifying appropriate engineering solutions. 
  • Ability to ensure adherence to technical specifications and engineering standards throughout all WASH construction and infrastructure activities. 
  • Ability to prepare, review, and follow up on technical documentation—including drawings, BoQs, schedules, and cost estimates – using appropriate engineering design software such as AutoCAD
  • Ability to support the planning, development, and follow‑up of WASH implementation plans – ensuring designs and activities align with project timelines, and technical requirements – in coordination with technical colleagues.
  • Ability to monitor WASH infrastructural activities in the field, including construction quality, adherence to technical standards, and progress against plans. 
  • Ability to conduct regular field monitoring visits and document findings, risks, and required follow‑up actions.
  • Ability to implement and maintain project progress trackers and monitoring tools, consolidating information from field visits, partners, and government counterparts.
  • Strong knowledge of procurement processes and ability to support logistical and contractual follow-up to ensure timely and compliant delivery.
  • Experience in reviewing and analyzing bids, verifying technical compliance, comparing specifications and cost estimates, and providing inputs for supplier selection
  • Ability to liaise effectively with government authorities, partners, contractors, and site representatives throughout all phases of project execution.
  • Ability to supervise or guidfield workers, contractors, or junior staff on technical tasks and field procedures. 
  • Ability to support training or induction sessions on WASH/Technical standards, field protocols, and site procedures.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills;
  • Ability to present clear and concise information; 
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure;
  • Good level of computer literacy; personal commitment, efficiency, flexibility, drive for results
  • Knowledge of SAP is an advantage.
