Job Title: Post Doctoral Researcher I (Heat Study)
Location: Fajara, Gambia

Job Information
- The MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM is embarking on a study looking at vulnerable groups that have been identified as high risk of the health effects of heat and extreme heat, and these include pregnant women, children, the elderly, those that perform manual labor, and those with chronic health conditions – The Heat Studies. These ongoing studies will explore in detail the health effects of acute and chronic heat exposure on vulnerable groups.
- The MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM is seeking to recruit a Post Doctoral Researcher who will carry a component of support to research activities of the project but will also take scientific and leadership initiatives to advance his/her research career.
- The post-holder will conduct, manage, and oversee research activities to support projects and studies towards meeting the study objectives while at the same time building a researcher development path. The post-holder will be evaluated to transition into Post-doctoral Researcher-2 after 3 years.
Essential Criteria
- PhD in Epidemiology, Population Health, Public Health, Environmental Health, Climate Change and Health, or related fields.
- Excellent knowledge of English, written and spoken.
- Strong quantitative skills (managing, analyzing, and interpreting data), with extensive expertise in medical statistics, modeling, and programming techniques in R.
- Ability to work on concurrent projects, prioritize, and balance multiple tasks.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team with people from diverse cultures.
- Ability to manage field workers, research teams, and partnerships.
- Excellent interpersonal and strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong work ethic.
Desirable
- Experience with work on the climate change and health intersection, including linking heat impact on health.
- Experience with geospatial analysis, GIS, and data science.
- Experience with advanced statistical methods used in environmental epidemiology.
- Disposition to work in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
Additional Information
Salary / Benefits:
- The salary will be paid in Grade 2, 35 Points of MRCG at LSHTM’s payscale at a gross monthly salary of 87,707.26 Dalasi. This converts to $1,322 approximately per month using the prevailing Dalasi/USD exchange rate.
- Please note that the salary will be paid in Dalasi and that the USD figure quoted is only given as a guide.
- For displaced staff, the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, displacement allowance for spouse and children, contribution to school fees, and shipment of personal effects.
Conditions:
- The appointment will be for 2 years initially and will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months.
