Malteser International is the international humanitarian relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta. We have been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa States, MI is currently active in the WASH, Protection, and FNSL sectors for saving and improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee populations as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene which include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines, and hygiene promotion. The protection activities focus on prevention and response to Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases. The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood interventions mainly focus on micro gardening, pullet rearing for egg production, composting, and Nutrition (food demonstration, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and sensitization on nutrition). Malteser International applies a participatory, gender-sensitive, and inclusive approach.
For our work in Jere, Borno State, Nigeria, we are recruiting an experienced Nutrition Assistant – National Position.
Under the direct report of the Area Coordinator, the Nutrition Assistance is responsible for the implementation of nutrition activities in Dusuman community in Jere LGA, Borno State, Nigeria. Within the responsibilities, the nutrition assistance will need to ensure compliance with Malteser International’s and donor guidelines to implement nutrition intervention.
Main Responsibilities:
- Support implementation of nutrition project
- Support the planning, coordination and lead the implementation of nutrition project under the guidance of Area Coordinator including compliance with project objectives, donor requirements and MI guidelines
- Collect data, develop reports including compliance with Malteser International
- Build relationship with local partners and community
Participate in the implementation of nutrition project
- Assist in the training of community mobilizers, nutrition messaging facilitators, lead mothers and fathers.
- Conduct Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) screening for children under five and Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLWs)
- Identify and refer malnourished children to OTP site/TSFP and provide follow-up of referred cases to ensure they receive treatment.
- Oversee the preparation and teaching of Tom Brown
- Assist in organizing, supervising cooking demonstrations, demonstrate proper food blending, preparation, and feeding techniques to caregivers
- Support Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) counselling and mother to mother support group session
- Ensure items for tom brown production are distributed and well managed
- Distribute nutrition commodities (tom brown ingredeints) through commodity voucher from approved vendors
- Ensure the gender mainstreaming during the implementation of activities.
- Attend coordination meeting with the partners in Jere LGA.
Collect data, develop reports including compliance with Malteser International
- Maintain accurate records of screening, counselling and referrals
- Submit timely reports to the area coordinator
- Monitor community volunteers and nutrition messaging facilitators during field activities
- Track attendance and participation during group nutrition sessions
- Participate in the evaluation of project needs (HR, Finance, and Logistics)
Build relationships with local partners and community
- Present the purpose of the project to the various local partners.
- Liaise with community leaders, community volunteers, nutrition messaging facilitators and the beneficiaries.
- Maintain a positive relationship between the organization and the community.
- Comply with Malteser International mandate, code of conduct and humanitarian principles.
Additional Responsibilities:

- Nutrition assistance is required to be flexible and adaptable with regards to the implementation of the daily work/activities.
- The nutrition assistance is also expected to conduct all duties in a professional manner following Malteser International staff regulations
Area Coordinator:
Report to the supervisor all difficulties and relevant information, as well as all relevant issues concerning project implementation
Human Resources:
- Coordinate with the Food and Nutrition Mangere on a daily base
- Report to the supervisor all difficulties and relevant information, as well as all relevant issues concerning safety, security, IT and Supplies and HR issues on a timely manner.
General conduct:
- Maintain a “client-friendly” atmosphere that is non-judgmental and supportive of beneficiaries regardless of their background, with special attention for respect of medical confidentiality.
- Participate in office work with colleagues as a good team player.
- Be an active role model towards the target population, by adhering to a healthy personal behavior and lifestyle.

- Carry out additional tasks as required by supervisor.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, Knowledge, and Experience
- Minimum academic qualification of University Degree or equivalence in any related relevant field, with a minimum of 2 years prior experience in the sector, preferably in the humanitarian context
- Demonstrated management skills (e.g. field team, project, security and safety)
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the capacity to see the big picture and make sound judgments and decisions
- Proactive, resourceful, solutions-oriented, and results-oriented, with a genuine interest in learning
- Flexibility and strong communication skills with proven ability to work effectively with local governments, align with MI values and standards
- Knowledge of local context, including dialects of the titled location, is a major criteria
- Being a qualified indigene of Borno State is an asset; with demonstrated ability to speak and understand the local dialects of the titled location
