Main objective and responsibility of the position

The Outreach NTS supports the implementation of outreach activities within the Sokoto Noma and Nutrition Project, working closely with Community Health Workers (CHEWs) and outreach teams delivering community-based health and nutrition services, including ATFC, TSFP and PBWG programmes.

The role contributes to the early detection, follow-up, and referral of patients, while ensuring the quality implementation of outreach activities in line with MSF principles, protocols, and standards.

General Accountabilities:

• Carry out the functions and tasks associated to nursing i.e. perform as a nurse or anesthetist, whenever required or needed, in order to optimize the resources, contributing with his/her knowledge and experience.
• Implement all the protocols and hygiene procedures, and supervise his/her team follow the same standards, in order to warrant the quality of the care and service in his/her speciality.
• Organize and coordinate the activities of his/her team (week’s schedule, annual leave, absences, etc.), evaluate their performance and define and ensure the needs for training of staff, in order to ensure the coverage of the human resources needs and maintain high standards of quality.
• Carry out and/or supervise the (decentralized) pharmacy and medical equipment management (drugs orders, follow-up of the stock, storage conditions, inventories, follow-up of expired drugs and their destruction, drugs consumption, etc.) in his or her department, in order to satisfy the needs of material with efficiency and effectiveness.
• Ensuring that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensuring that cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service.
• Carry-out and/or coordinate administrative (exit-paper, transfer-paper, etc.), information and data collection (patient files, forms, statistics, etc.) tasks, and elaborate regular reporting, in order to have updated and reliable information about the day-to-day activity in the project, output/ outcome and support decision-taking.
• Give feedback/ reports to medical focal point.

Context Specific Accountabilities:

Supervision and Coordination of Outreach Activities

• Lead and supervise all outreach nutrition activities under ATFC, TSFP, and PBWG programmes.
• Ensure outreach teams implement activities in line with protocols, guidelines, and quality standards.
• Plan, coordinate, and monitor outreach schedules, coverage, and team deployment in collaboration with field coordination teams.
• Conduct regular field supervision visits to assess performance and service quality.

Leadership and Supervision of Outreach Teams

• Directly supervise CHEWs, Nutrition Assistants, and Community Health Workers involved in outreach services.
• Ensure staff correctly perform MUAC screening, anthropometric measurements, case identification, and follow-up activities.
• Oversee adherence to referral pathways, defaulter tracing, and continuity of care procedures.
• Conduct performance evaluation and provide structured feedback to improve team effectiveness.
• Facilitate on-the-job coaching, mentoring, and refresher trainings for outreach staff.

Quality Assurance and Clinical Oversight

• Ensure correct implementation of admission, follow-up, referral, and discharge criteria for ATFC, TSFP, and PBWG programmes.
• Supervise counselling activities provided to caregivers on nutrition, hygiene, treatment adherence, and follow-up.
• Monitor quality of care and ensure corrective actions are implemented where gaps are identified.
• Support early detection of clinical deterioration and ensure timely referral to appropriate services.

Disease Surveillance and Early Warning

• Ensure timely detection, documentation, and reporting of priority diseases and alert conditions during outreach activities.
• Strengthen integration of nutrition outreach with community-based disease surveillance systems.
• Support identification of trends in malnutrition and related conditions for early response.
• Report suspected outbreaks or unusual patterns immediately to medical coordination teams.

Supply Chain and Therapeutic Nutrition Oversight

• Supervise proper storage, handling, and distribution of RUTF and supplementary nutrition commodities.
• Monitor stock levels, consumption trends, and supply gaps during outreach implementation.
• Ensure accountability and correct usage of nutrition supplies in line with protocols.
• Report stock discrepancies, losses, or misuse promptly to project management.

Data Management, Reporting, and Accountability

• Ensure high-quality data collection, validation, and reporting from outreach teams.
• Supervise completion of registers, screening tools, referral forms, and follow-up documentation.
• Review and verify routine reports before submission to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Analyse key indicators (admissions, recovery, default, non-response, mortality) to support decision-making.

Community Engagement and Stakeholder Management

• Strengthen collaboration between community structures, local authorities, and outreach services to improve access and acceptance of care.
• Engage community leaders, influencers, and local stakeholders to support programme implementation and community mobilisation.
• Maintain coordination with Ministry of Health representatives, partner organisations, and implementing stakeholders at field level.
• Ensure effective referral linkages between community outreach and facility-based services.

Advocacy and Community Awareness

• Support advocacy efforts to improve awareness of acute malnutrition, PBWG nutrition needs, and early healthseeking behaviours.
• Promote understanding of programme objectives and encourage community ownership of nutrition and health interventions.
• Support messaging on timely referral, treatment adherence, and prevention of malnutrition and related conditions.

Infection Prevention, Safety, and Compliance

• Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) standards during all outreach activities.
• Supervise safe handling of equipment, hygiene practices, and medical waste disposal by teams and caregivers.
• Promote safe working conditions for staff and beneficiaries in all outreach locations.

Coordination and Reporting

• Maintain regular communication with medical, nutrition, and field coordination teams.
• Report operational challenges, risks, and field gaps in a timely manner.
• Participate in coordination meetings, technical discussions, and program review sessions.

REQUIREMENTS (QUALIFICATIONS):

Education        Bachelor’s degree or diploma in nursing (essential).

Experience         Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience, including 1 year in a supervisory role, particularly in nutrition programs (essential).

Experience in nutrition programs, community health, or humanitarian settings (desirable)

Languages         Fluent Hausa and English (essential).

Knowledge      Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
