Job Title: Nurse (Emergency Response Program)
Location: Maiduguri/Jere, Nigeria (with field visits to other locations in Nigeria)
Duration: 6 Months (Renewable depending on funding)

About The MENTOR Initiative
The MENTOR Initiative is a specialist tropical disease control INGO, collaborating with the Borno State Ministry of Health to strengthen and establish effective, lifesaving health services. Our mission includes capacity-building, surveillance, and control of life-threatening vector-borne diseases. We are looking for a dedicated Nurse to join our Emergency Response Program, which delivers critical health services and disease prevention to vulnerable communities in Borno State.
Key Qualifications
- Education: Nursing and/or midwifery qualification (recognized institution).
- Experience: Clinical experience in primary health care, integrated community case management, and vector-borne disease control.
- Community Health: Background in public health or nutrition in emergencies is advantageous.
- Training: Proven experience in coaching, training, and capacity-building for healthcare workers.
- Protocol Knowledge: Familiarity with Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) and Nigeria’s National Malaria Guidelines.
- Public Health Systems: Understanding of Nigeria’s primary healthcare systems, including mobile clinics and outreach.
- Data Skills: Experience in medical data reporting and surveillance.
- Supervision: Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
- NGO Experience: Experience with INGOs or NGOs is a plus.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English and Kanuri is mandatory.
- Knowledge of Hausa is a strong advantage.

- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinic Preparation and Set-Up
- Set up medical sites, organize furniture, and prepare necessary drugs, equipment, and supplies.
- Ensure all materials are clean, organized, and ready for each mobile clinic.
2. Patient Triage and Vital Signs
- Support triage process in collaboration with medical doctors.
- Record patients’ weight, temperature, and blood pressure.
- Administer deworming medications per protocol and refer medical emergencies.
3. Paramedical Procedures and Vaccinations
- Conduct malaria rapid diagnostic tests, urine dipstick tests, hemoglobin tests, and dressings.
- Administer vaccinations according to the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) calendar.
- Ensure daily cleaning and sterilization of medical equipment.
4. Health Education
- Conduct health education sessions in patient waiting areas.
- Cover topics such as hygiene, safe water, nutrition, immunization, antenatal/postnatal care, family planning, and disease prevention.
5. Data Collection and Reporting
- Document daily medical activities and participate in weekly data computerization.
- Prepare and submit weekly reports to the Team Leader.
6. Participation in Meetings and Training
- Attend internal meetings on medical, security, and operational issues.
- Participate actively in training sessions organized by MENTOR.
7. Additional Responsibilities
- Support the setup and inventory management of mobile clinics.
- Respond flexibly to changing field needs and additional duties as requested by the Team Leader.
- Maintain strict adherence to MENTOR’s Code of Conduct on Ethics, Integrity, and Safeguarding.
