The following vacancy is open to all residents of Nigeria.

Contract Period: Indefinite

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understanding, advocating, implementing, and monitoring universal hygiene standards/precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security regulations, and other protocols and procedures in medical facilities, as well as guaranteeing high levels of cleanliness in his/her working environment.
  • Always keep medical secrets and confidentiality in mind.
  • Organizing and carrying out medical prescription-based care and treatments, as well as aiding during consultations, daily rounds, and other medical procedures.
  • Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
  • Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
  • Ensure patients are received, installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort.
  • For ITFC/ER nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
  • Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization
  • Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
  • Carry and supervise administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.
  • Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorization, etc.)

 Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.

  • Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

Administration

Ensure every patient is noted in the ER register book, and the malnutrition admissions are noted in the ITFC register. Medical care

  • Ensure all the new admissions in the waiting area are seen and sort them according to our triage system to rapidly identify life threatening conditions in patients that must be treated immediately (priorityl), those with serious conditions that should be treated rapidly (priority2) and those who should be treated in turn (priority 3).

Checks general status of patients, giving priority for consultation to those that present signs of severity (ETAT): lethargy-unconsciousness, convulsions, fever, dehydration, respiratory distress and malnutrition.  When called upon, together with the ER team, be able to assist in resuscitation of critical patients.

              Follow patients to their respective department decided by the MD and give an in-depth handover to the nurses there.        Correct waste segregation and disposal according to MSF guidelines- respect the bucket system in place.

Patient orientation

  • Participate in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary while checking the admission checklist.

Teamwork and cooperation

  • Participate in meetings organized by the department or supervisor. Participate/go to mandatory trainings requested by the supervisor.

Minimum Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor of Nursing Science/Diploma in Nursing essential. Additional Diploma in Nursing/Midwifery desirable. Required license to practice
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years’ experience in Nursing practice with MSF, other INGO/NGO or Private medical facility.

Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting        Languages: English essential. Local language (Hausa, Kanuri) desirable.

            Knowledge: Average knowledge of malnutrition case management protocols.

      Competencies: Results and Quality Orientated, Teamwork and Cooperation, Behavioural Flexibility, Commitment to MSF Principles, Stress Management.
