Position:          Midwife (1 Position)
Location:         Rann/Kala Balge, Borno State, Nigeria
Duration:         3 Months

General description of the position:

The midwife is responsible for provision of sexual and reproductive health services according to the standard protocols for the project’s activities at Rann, Kala Balge LGA, Borno state. The midwife closely cooperates with the nurses and other community health staff to ensure quality and accountability of deliverables, and respect for deadlines. Under the supervision of the Health Team Lead.

Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Core Clinical Responsibilities

  • Manage pregnant and lactating women, including childbirth.
  • Prescribe medications and perform minor medical procedures.
  • Ensure ANC, PNC, family planning, BEmONC, neonatal care, and adherence to protocols.
  • Refer patients to specialist care when necessary.
  • Follow up on newborns, emphasizing breastfeeding, vaccination, and safe practices.
  • Promote hygiene, infection control, and a safe clinical environment.
  • Maintain patient records and report issues.
  • Perform other assigned tasks assigned by the Health team lead and project manager.

Community Responsibilities

  • Supervise CHEWs and community volunteers.
  • Support maternal and newborn care in communities.
  • Provide counselling for ANC, PNC, and IYCF beneficiaries.
  • Facilitate timely referrals from TBAs to medical facilities.
  • Promote health education and hygiene practices.
  • Participate in data collection and assist the team lead.
  • Perform other assigned tasks assigned by the Health team lead and project manager.

Team Management

  • Supervise and manage the reproductive health team with support from the team lead.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of available tools.
  • Enforce safety procedures and protocols.
  • Orient and brief new employees or volunteers under their supervision.

Reporting, Communication & Coordination

  • Prepare activity reports under the supervision of the team lead.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, and workshops relevant to project activities and objectives.
  • Provide updates to the team lead on activities, challenges, community relations, and beneficiary engagement.
  • Engage with local populations and authorities to assess needs, complaints, and events impacting Tdh’s community activities.
  • Report concerns related to activities or security issues.
  • Adhere to Tdh Security Regulations.

Other

  • Agree to comply with Tdh Code of Conduct and promote Child Safeguarding policy.
  • Report serious cases of abuse on children that s/he would be aware of in Tdh’s intervention locations. Strict confidentiality must be respected.
  • Adhere to and enforce current administrative and logistical regulations and procedures.

Job requirements

Experience/competences:

  • Registered Midwife (RM) with a strong reproductive health background.
  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional experience in the humanitarian or related field.
  • Proficiency in initiating treatment for women requiring medical intervention, including triage of gynecological emergencies.
  • Experience in maintaining drug and fluid therapy per agreed Patient Group Directions.
  • Understanding of core professional concepts and principles, including duty of candor and duty of care.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken), Hausa (essential), and Kanuri (desired).

  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and solve problems with attention to detail.
  • Effective oral communication, writing, and reporting skills in English.
  • Proactive, autonomous, analytical, and rigorous approach to tasks.

  • Basic proficiency in standard computer software and IT tools, including electronic communication.
