SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL (SI) is an international humanitarian aid association that, for over 40 years, has been providing relief to populations affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters by meeting their basic needs, such as food, water, and shelter. Particularly committed to combating diseases linked to unsafe water, the world’s leading cause of death, SI’s interventions leverage expertise in the areas of access to drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion, as well as in the essential area of food security and livelihoods. Present in 26 countries, SI’s teams—a total of 3,200 people, including expatriates, national employees, permanent staff at headquarters, and a few volunteers—operate with professionalism and commitment while respecting cultures.
The mission
Since March 2020, SI has been working in France to address the challenges of water, hygiene, and sanitation insecurity in five French territories. In partnership with metropolitan water and sanitation operators and their foundations, its projects target populations living in degraded sites such as shantytowns or squats, who have limited access to basic services, in terms of drinking water, sanitation, and access to essential hygiene products. SI’s strategy is to support local stakeholders in their search for concrete solutions, by proposing to improve the sanitary conditions of the sites, in particular through the installation of drinking water supplies, sanitation infrastructure, and the development of pilot projects adapted to the context of each intervention area.
Called in 2021 to Mayotte by local community actors, after an exploratory mission that showed the extent of the needs in water, hygiene and sanitation, the SI France mission opened a base at the end of 2022 in the youngest and most precarious department in France. In 2023, a water crisis led to water cuts for households for more than 2 days out of 3. In 2024, a cholera epidemic was declared in the department, making access to water, hygiene and sanitation even more essential.
On December 15, 2024, tropical cyclone “CHIDO” struck Mayotte with high intensity. Thousands of people were affected by flooding, strong winds, and destroyed homes. The most vulnerable dwellings were particularly hard hit, with roofs torn off, walls collapsing, and entire neighborhoods rendered uninhabited. In addition to the immediate shelter emergency, there are critical needs for drinking water, hygiene, and sanitation, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. Access to health services is also compromised.
Under these conditions, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL, after ensuring the health of its four employees and the dozens of volunteers who share its actions, immediately mobilized: providing purified water to emergency shelters and disaster-stricken neighborhoods. The team is now preparing to adapt and intensify its actions for the most vulnerable people.
General objective:
The Field Coordinator has the role of Country Director by delegation in their geographical area of intervention (Mayotte).
He/she proposes the regional strategy based on the context, the needs of vulnerable people and the associative and institutional landscape and ensures its implementation once validated.
He/she monitors and guarantees that projects are carried out in accordance with the Solidarités International charter and in compliance with internal and contractual procedures.
He/she mobilizes the material and financial resources necessary for the proper conduct of the programs and supervises their management.
He/she coordinates the teams in place and is the guarantor of their safety in his/her assigned area.
He/she is the direct and privileged contact for the Country Director and the institutions in his/her intervention area.
Priorities for the first 2-3 months:
- Transition from the 1st emergency phase to more stable activities
- Return to normal of processes and tools of Solidarités International
- (Re)mobilization of the team and structuring for acceptable workload
A salaried position: Depending on experience, starting from €3,183 + 35% cost of living allowance, or €4,297 gross.
Training and experience:
Advanced university degree. At least 3-4 years of experience in the non-profit sector in France (or humanitarian sector), some of which in positions of responsibility.
EXPERIENCE IN THE HUMANITARIAN SECTOR: 3-4 years
EXPERIENCE IN EQUIVALENT POSITION: 0-2 years
