History of the organization:
Village Health Works (VHW) is a 501(c)(3) social justice organization founded on the belief that health equity is not a commodity but a right. Founded in partnership with the communities we currently serve, VHW’s mission is to provide high-quality, compassionate, critically-minded health care and education in a dignified environment to those most in need. VHW’s holistic approach integrates clinical services with education, food security, economic development, environmental protection, music, and the arts. In the context in which we currently work, this is the only way to sustainably end extreme, multi-generational scarcity in a way that uplifts and engages communities with dignity and in their own context. We believe that lack of access to quality health care and education is the greatest threat to development and peace in the world.
Currently, VHW offers a wide range of clinical and community programs to a catchment area of over 200,000 people in Rumonge and Bururi provinces, although its doors are open to all patients, regardless of their origin. Our first clinic provides over 51,000 outpatient consultations per year. From 2007 to summer 2023, our 60-bed inpatient units provided basic non-surgical services to adults and children, including treatment of malnutrition, mental health, chronic and acute illnesses, and uncomplicated obstetric deliveries. These services were administered by our team of general practitioners under the supervision of our current medical director.
Village Health Works has embarked on a plan to expand its clinical services to provide comprehensive and quality medical care and training. To achieve this goal, VHW has constructed and officially opened an 85,000 square foot state-of-the-art teaching hospital with multiple departments including surgery, obstetrics, intensive care, pediatrics and neonatology, emergency, pathology laboratory, medical education and research center, etc. To provide excellent patient care and quality training, we need to expand the scope and skills of healthcare providers through training, education and research, recruitment through the development and rigorous implementation of systems and structures, policies and procedures framed by high quality standards and international standards.
In addition, VHW established the Kigutu International Academy, a boarding school for students from grades nine to twelve, to provide young minds with an education based on critical thinking and prepare them to become the leaders we want for their country and the continent, for a better future.

Job Purpose: To provide safe, effective and curative health services, targeting the most important causes of common diseases, morbidity and mortality rates in the target population.
Specific responsibilities:
Nursing care;
- Ensure the proper management of hospital wards and consultation services
- Welcoming patients to the department
- Ensure proper maintenance of records
- Ensure the management and replenishment of the department’s emergency pharmacy
- Provide supervision and guidance to nursing assistants.
- Ensure the transfer of services and continuity of care
- Conduct rounds in the room to assess the health status of patients and ensure the implementation or revision of the care plan.
- Participate in decision-making during tours
- Supervise patients’ diet
- Carry out certain clinical tasks within the limits of responsibilities or under medical delegation
- Ensuring injection safety and biomedical waste management
- Participate in the academic and scientific activities of the institution (medical tour, nursing tour, presentation of continuing education
- Participate in activities on Improving the Quality of Care
- Participate in staff meetings
- Provide quality essential nursing care to all patients in the outpatient and inpatient departments.
- Ensuring that all patients receive their treatment at the right time, in the right dose and by the right route.
- Plan and participate in all bedside nursing procedures as a member of the health care team.
- Maintain cleanliness of the healthcare environment for patients and other staff.
- Assist patients with feeding and washing, especially bedridden patients.
- Participate in all other care-related tasks in accordance with the village health work guidelines and protocol.
- Able to assess patients’ condition at any time and take immediate action, record and call for help.
Administration;
- Assist the department head in preparing patients and other medical supplies for department rounds
- Receive patients, record admission, discharge, maintain patient records and update them from time to time,
- Promote good ethical standards related to consent and confidentiality.
- Maintain standards while receiving patients, recording admissions, maintaining patient records which include discharges, deaths and referrals and update them from time to time
- Record health data and prepare daily, weekly and monthly reports as assigned by the Department Manager.
- This report should be completed at the end of each shift. Full handover to the next shift, including patient status, any special orders, department inventory, both upon arrival (receipt of handover) and departure (handover).
- Collaborate in the education of students, provide supervision and participate in the evaluation of interns.
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Each nurse in the Nursing Department, in addition to being an honest, upright and responsible person, must have the ability to:

Required knowledge:

- Perform sterile procedures: sorting, storage, decontamination and proper disposal of waste,
- Check and administer medications as prescribed, noting doses and duration.
- Set up, label and monitor blood drops and transfusions
- Perform routine checkups.
- Respond quickly to emergencies.
- Communicate with the patient and their loved ones about the progress, planned or expected management of their illness
- Relieve anxiety in patients and their loved ones.

Level of education and experience required:
- A2 preferred.
- 2 to 5 years of nursing experience after qualification
