Job position- Hygiene and Behaviour Change Supervisor

Work location-Bama
Reporting to- WASH Programme Manager

Supervision of- Outreach Hygiene Promoters/OHP Assistants

General purpose of the position

The Hygiene and Behaviour Change Supervisor provides technical oversight and guidance to quality implementation, monitoring and reporting of hygiene and behaviour change pillars as defined in proposals. This includes supporting the contingency and the preparedness planning process, assessment and development of long-term hygiene and behaviour change strategies and operational plans. Under the WASH Programme Manager, the role holder coordinates with other WASH partners including Government actors thus ensuring an adequate level of WASH service is provided at each site in accordance with the INTERSOS WASH Manual and Technical Guidelines, and applicable INTERSOS Standards and/or International/National Standards.

Tasks and Main Responsibilities

  • Conducts campaigns to inform potential beneficiary communities about the sanitation approaches and the process communities and households to request support
  • Supports the process for selection of communities according to criteria
  • Conducts feasibility surveys and research covering social, institutional and financial aspects as well as technical possibilities
  • Carries out feasibility surveys and prepares designs and estimates for sanitation and hygiene promotion projects
  • Prepares contract documents for specialist support services for sanitation development
  • Supports local communities develop appropriate enabling environments for sanitation development
  • Provides information on the procurement needs for sanitation development to INTERSOS support team (logistics, finance) for a procurement plan in accordance with the program and project work plans.
  • Liaises closely with the other components of sanitation and hygiene promotion and the water supply teams throughout the planning, design and implementation stages.
  • Supports the development and implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction and contingency planning related to sanitation with local authorities.
  • Ensures that mainstreaming and integration of gender, protection issues, disability, age and other vulnerabilities are considered and integrated into project work plans.
  • Maintains records of activity inputs, outputs and outcomes and other monitoring data, including the use of databases
  • Reports regularly, orally and in writing to the WASH program manager in accordance with procedures and formats provided
  • Provides information on hygiene and sanitation activities for INTERSOS’ regular update of the WASH Cluster’s 4Ws of WASH activities in the geographic area and any other information required.
  • In collaboration with the WASH supervisor, takes lead during diseases outbreaks and carry out duties in implementation of emergency response as may be directed, from time to time
  • Assesses emergency needs, as requested, especially taking into the broader perspective of local Public Health needs and sphere standards.
  • Assists information and training of hygiene and sanitation committees for the sustainability of WASH facilities developed
  • Facilitates monthly team meetings with the teams, reviews objectives, informs them of issues relevant to their work and provides feedback and ensures they receive coaching and training.
  • Ensures all the software component (hygiene promotion activities, water transportation & storage facilities distribution etc.) are implemented as per the signed project agreement and the sphere standards
  • Represents INTERSOS at local level coordination meetings involving local authorities, Donors, sector partners

Position Requirements

Professional requirements

  • Minimum of B.Sc./HND in Water Engineering, civil engineering or other related disciplines
  • At least 3 years of experience in a similar position/related

  • Excellent networking skills, cultural sensitivity and adaptability
  • Good communication skills and ability to conduct training and awareness.
  • Understanding of gender, protection and human rights.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective and working relations with national staff members and other stakeholders.
  • Experience living and working in cross-cultural, multi-sector, insecure, and/or remote environments.
  • Proficiency in common computer packages and financial software (MS Excel, MS Word)
  • Good command of written and spoken English, Kanuri and/or Hausa Language
