Introduction 

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), is faith-based Catholic International Organization working across 56 countries whose mission is to accompany, serve and advocate for the rights of refugees and IDPs in conflict zones, detention centers, camp and urban settings, and on remote borders. JRS provides psychosocial support programmes in detention centres and refugee camps, provides humanitarian relief in emergency displacement situations, Education and livelihoods programmes, provides skill development and opportunities for integration into host communities. 

Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Health Officer is to coordinate the medical and training activities of the assigned programs and provide medical expertise and guidance for the medical personnel in the projects.

Role/Mission

This position will be responsible for initiating, directing, and coordinating all required health care activities.

Work closely with the team leader to determine the medical and training needs of the programs within the scope of the grants.

Develop and improve plans for medical care and training of counterparts and implements those plans through Program Coordinators, Site Medical Doctors, Nurses, etc., at the various sites. 

Collaborate with the community recognized health authorities and relevant international health agencies for the development of an approved curriculum and program. In addition, collaborate with the same parties for the standardization of reporting practices. 

Public health activities

  • Make health/medical and needs assessments
  • Work with local health authorities, Program Coordinators, medical staff, and team leader to design and implement a system for reporting the outcomes, and health delivery protocols. 
  • Assist in the selection and training of qualified program field staff. 
  • Submit appropriate reports of field activities to team leader. 
  • Make frequent site visits to facilities to ensure that appropriate care and training are being conducted.

Required Profile 

Have a medical degree; preferably Master’s in Public Health.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience of which 3 years should be of developing country experience or resource deprived environment.
  • Experience in programs relating to primary health care, maternal and child health, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and communicable diseases.
  • Experience in effectively dealing with local health workers, as well as government officials, and other NGOs.

Qualities

  • Adhere to JRS values and abide by the code of conduct and other policies.
  • Excellent self-motivation skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and good working knowledge of a local language (hausa)
  • Flexibility to work in a diverse multicultural team.
  • Ability to live and work in unstable, insecure environments and sometimes inhospitable conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to work under tight deadlines.
