Job Summary
- The Grove Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Grove mobile cranes for lifting, positioning, loading, unloading and movement of heavy equipment and materials.
- The operator must ensure all lifting activities are carried out in accordance with approved lifting plans, manufacturer specifications and site safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Grove mobile cranes safely and efficiently for various lifting and material-handling activities.
- Conduct pre-start inspections of the crane, including hydraulic systems, wire ropes, hooks, brakes, outriggers, tyres and safety devices.
- Verify crane capacity, load charts, boom configuration and operating radius before lifting.
- Perform lifting operations according to approved lifting plans and instructions.
- Position the crane correctly and ensure the ground is suitable and stable before operations.
- Properly deploy and monitor outriggers, mats and stabilizers where required.
- Coordinate with riggers, signalmen and supervisors during lifting operations.
- Follow standard hand signals and radio communication procedures.
- Safely lift, move, position and lower heavy machinery, equipment, structural components and materials.
- Monitor crane operating conditions and immediately report abnormal sounds, vibrations, leaks or equipment defects.
- Maintain safe working distances from power lines, structures, personnel and other equipment.
- Ensure loads are properly rigged and balanced before lifting.
- Stop lifting operations when unsafe conditions, excessive wind, poor visibility or equipment problems are identified.
- Maintain crane operating logs, inspection records and daily activity reports.
- Carry out routine operator-level maintenance and housekeeping as required.
- Report mechanical, hydraulic or electrical faults to the maintenance team.
- Assist maintenance personnel during crane servicing, inspection and repairs.
- Ensure the crane remains within its rated lifting capacity at all times.
- Participate in emergency response and recovery operations when required.
- Comply with company HSE policies, lifting procedures and statutory requirements.
- Maintain good housekeeping around the crane and work area.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Crane Supervisor or Operations Manager.
Qualifications
- Minimum of SSCE / OND / HND or relevant technical qualification.
- Valid Grove/mobile crane operator certification or competency licence.
- Valid medical fitness certificate where required.
- Relevant lifting and rigging training is an added advantage.
Experience:
- 3–5 years of experience operating Grove or similar mobile cranes.
- Experience operating cranes in mining, construction, industrial, power plant or heavy equipment environments is preferred.
- Proven experience with different lifting configurations and load capacities.
