Facilities Supervisor at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Duties

  • Carry out general maintenance of screen houses and glasshouses to ensure proper functioning and compliance with research requirements.
  • Supervise screen house staff, technicians, and casual workers engaged in maintenance and construction.
  • Supervise and coordinate the construction of new screen houses and related infrastructure.
  • Conduct repairs, including replacement of roofing glass, nets, and frames; oversee washing, cleaning, and fumigation of screen/glasshouses.
  • Conduct daily inspections of all screen houses and glasshouses to identify repair or maintenance needs.
  • Oversee requisition, collection, and proper utilization of materials for screen house construction and repairs, ensuring accountability.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports on maintenance, construction, and operational activities.
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental (HS&E) standards during construction and maintenance work.
  • Support cost-recovery planning by tracking labour, materials, and maintenance costs for proper budgeting and reporting.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Farm Management.

Requirements

  • HND / B.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Building Technology, or related field; Certification in Construction Management or Facility Maintenance is an advantage.
  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in facility maintenance, construction, or agricultural infrastructure management is required.

Competencies:
The ideal candidate must have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety standards, PPE usage, and safe construction/maintenance practices.
  • Training or certification in HS&E or risk management.
  • Experience in research farm infrastructure or controlled environment agriculture
  • Strong technical knowledge of screen house/glasshouse maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of automated screen house systems (temperature, humidity, irrigation controls)
  • Ability to supervise staff and casual laborers effectively
  • Training in project or construction supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical manuals
  • Familiarity with procurement and vendor management
  • Skilled in cost tracking, reporting, and documentation
  • Knowledge of donor compliance and reporting
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience with ERP or facility management software
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written).
