Communications Officer At Norwegian Church Aid (NCA)

NCA has been operational in northeastern Nigeria, providing humanitarian relief with a strong presence in Monguno, Maiduguri, Pulka, and Dikwa.
We are now seeking the right candidate to join our team as a Communications officer to help us further our mission and contribute to ongoing efforts in the region. (See details below).

Duty Station: Maiduguri, Nigeria (with travels to other field locations)

General Description

Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) is seeking a Communications Officer to lead the communication efforts of its Nigeria country office. The ideal candidate will ensure NCA’s work is effectively shared with internal and external stakeholders, enhance organizational visibility, and support advocacy through impactful storytelling. This role is pivotal in articulating NCA’s programs and achievements to national and international audiences, including donors and partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate internal communications and link with regional/global teams.
  • Update the Country Director and global communications team on ongoing campaigns and media activities.
  • Develop communication materials: newsletters, social media content, press releases, annual reports, human-interest stories, etc.
  • Design and implement communication strategies that meet donor visibility requirements and support donor acquisition.
  • Serve as the media contact; manage inquiries, facilitate interviews, and report on NCA’s impact.
  • Monitor media coverage and compile analytical reports.
  • Share information with local communities, especially disaster-affected populations, to promote transparency.
  • Provide updates through [email protected], Viva Engage, and send monthly reports to the head office.
  • Maintain and regularly update the ONE page and the country office section of NCA’s website.
  • Actively participate in the NCA Communications Community of Practice (CoP).
  • Manage social media platforms and develop strategies to enhance digital presence.
  • Create and disseminate compelling stories, photos, and videos showcasing NCA’s impact.
  • Ensure brand consistency and alignment with NCA’s values and mission.
  • Provide communication training to staff, in line with the NCA Design Manual and Communication Policy.
  • Evaluate communication tools and campaigns for effectiveness and impact.
  • Support legal compliance documentation with HR/Country Director.
  • Represent NCA in national communication networks and external communication forums.
  • Archive and document all media assets and communication materials in line with NCA’s data protection and branding policies.
  • Support other departments during peak periods requiring communications input (e.g., reporting, campaigns).
  • Identify internal capacity gaps and recommend relevant tools, training, or resources.
  • Stay abreast of communication trends and innovations that can improve outreach.

Qualifications and Experience

Technical & Communication Skills

  • Strong background in media relations, content creation (writing, photography, videography), and social media management.
  • Confident facilitator for workshops, briefings, and public events.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite), with skills in digital communication and analytics.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field (required).
  • Additional certifications in humanitarian communications or gender-sensitive reporting (preferred).

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in communications, ideally in humanitarian or development settings.
  • Strong grasp of strategic communication, advocacy, and donor relations.
  • Demonstrable portfolio in crisis communication, community engagement, and storytelling.
  • Fluency in English and local languages (required).
