Job Title: Communication Officer

Location: Maiduguri, Nigeria

General Context of the Job/Project: 

The Communication Officer is responsible for covering SHO activities within project locations, managing media coverage, and overseeing social media handles to promote SHO’s mission, activities, and impact.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement communication strategies and plans to enhance visibility and awareness of SHO’s activities, achievements, and impact in project locations.
  2. Produce high-quality communication materials, including press releases, articles, blogs, success stories, photos, videos, and other content for dissemination through various channels.
  3. Coordinate media coverage of SHO events, activities, and initiatives, including organizing press conferences, media briefings, and interviews with journalists and media outlets.
  4. Manage SHO’s social media handles, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, to engage with stakeholders, share updates, and promote awareness of SHO’s work.
  5. Monitor media coverage and social media trends related to humanitarian issues, displacement, and other relevant topics, providing regular updates and analysis to inform SHO’s communication strategies.
  6. Collaborate with program teams and partners to gather information, stories, and data for communication materials, ensuring accuracy, relevance, and sensitivity to cultural context.
  7. Support the development and dissemination of advocacy messages and campaigns to raise awareness of key issues and promote policy change at local, national, and international levels.
  8. Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, influencers, and other key stakeholders to enhance SHO’s media presence and coverage.
  9. Provide communication support and training to SHO staff, partners, and beneficiaries, empowering them to effectively communicate SHO’s messages and achievements.
  10. Monitor and evaluate the impact of communication activities, including media coverage, social media engagement, website traffic, and audience feedback, to assess effectiveness and inform future strategies.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International

Development, or a related field. Additional training or certification in media relations, social media management, or communication strategies is desirable.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in communication, journalism, media relations, or public relations, preferably in the humanitarian or development sector.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, compelling, and engaging communication materials for different audiences and platforms.
  • Proficiency in digital media and social media platforms, with experience managing organizational accounts, creating content, and engaging with audiences online.
  • Knowledge of media relations principles and practices, including pitching stories, building relationships with journalists, and managing press inquiries.
  • Familiarity with photography, videography, and graphic design principles, with the ability to produce multimedia content for communication purposes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including staff, partners, media professionals, and community members.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required. Knowledge of local languages is an asset.
