(Tree Seedlings)

DURATION OF THE ACTIVITY: 4 days
Purpose of the Activities:
Mercy Corps under its Sustainable Natural resource planning and management is planning to
procure tree seedlings to be distributed to the 4 project locations in Taraba State. A key element
of this initiative is the procurement and distribution of tree seedlings to support reforestation
efforts, agroforestry, and sustainable resource management.
The COMITAS project is committed in ensuring that local communities receive the right species
to establish woodlots, reduce land degradation, and strengthen environmental sustainability,
thus contributing to the overall goal of mitigating resource-based conflicts.
Objectives
i. Provide local farmers and herders with high-quality tree seedlings to establish woodlots,
agroforestry systems, and reforestation projects, thereby improving soil fertility,
preventing soil erosion, and increasing biodiversity.
ii. Support the adoption of sustainable land management practices by introducing tree
planting as a means of diversifying income sources, reducing dependency on land
degradation, and promoting peaceful coexistence between farming and herding
communities.
iii. Reduce resource-based conflicts between farmers and herders, facilitating better
management of shared resources such as land, water, and grazing areas.
Conflict Prevention
Provide alternative livelihoods and incentives for cooperation between farmers and herders,
reducing competition over scarce resources and impact of climate change as well as improving
climatic conditions of their locations.
Capacity Building:
Support local farmers and herders with technical knowledge on planting and nurturing the
improved seedlings.
Geographic Coverage
Taraba State: Abbare B, Lau A, Monkin A, and Monkin B wards
Key Deliverables
The supplier is expected to deliver the following:

• Supply of Improved Seedlings
• Provide high-quality improved seedlings suitable for the specific agro-ecological zones of
  the targeted communities in Taraba State.
• Recommended seedlings include varieties of:
  i. Lucinia – 400
  ii. Mahogany – 400
  iii. Mango – 400
  iv. Guava – 400
  v. Cashew – 400
  Quantities
  2000 (500 per community).
  Distribution Logistics
• Ensure timely delivery of seedlings to all 4 communities, considering the transportation
  and storage requirements to maintain seedling viability.
• Work with community leaders, Natural Resource Management Committees (NRMCs),
  Program Officers and State Ministries of Environment or Department of Forestry at LGA
  levels to facilitate smooth distribution.
  Timeline
  The project is expected to be completed before the end of December 2024 from the date of
  contract signing.
  Quality Control
• Ensure all seedlings are inspected and certified by State Ministries of Environment or
  Departments of Forestry before delivery.
• Replace any seedlings found to be defective or unsuitable for the local environment
  within a reasonable timeframe.
  Expected Impact
• Improved agricultural yields and food security in target communities.
• Enhanced cooperation between farmers and herders over shared natural resources.
• Reduction in conflicts linked to competition over land and water resources.
  Qualification Requirements for Suppliers
• Proven track record in supplying agricultural inputs, especially improved seedlings, in
  rural communities.
• Ability to provide certified high-quality seedlings with a demonstrated history of success
  in similar environments.
• Capacity to provide technical support to local farmers and herders.
• Strong logistical capacity to ensure timely delivery in rural and sometimes hard-to-reach
  areas.
• Suppliers are expected to adhere to the highest standards of quality and efficiency to
  ensure the success of the project and its contributions to conflict mitigation.
  Budget
  The budget for the supply of improved seedlings will be based on:
  Cost of procurement of certified improved seedlings.
  Transportation and logistical costs to ensure delivery to all 4 communities.
  Terms of Payment
  Payment will be made after delivery and verification of seedlings by departments of Foresty.

  1.Budget on Letter Headed paper
  The budget for the supply of improved seedlings should be based on:
  Cost of procurement of certified improved seedlings.
  Transportation and logistical costs to ensure delivery to all 4 communities.

3. Evidence (PO/Contract) in supplying agricultural inputs, especially improved seedlings, in
   rural communities.
