I. Introduction
Solina Centre for International Development and Research (SCIDaR) is an indigenous non-profit institution that works to accelerate positive health, social and economic reforms through high quality program design and implementation, capacity building, implementation science research and knowledge generation, as well as agenda setting and stakeholder convening across human development sectors. Our work seeks to benefit primarily disadvantaged and under-served populations. We implement transformation programs in Nigeria and are currently expanding our footprint to several West and Central African countries. We are building a competent world class management team to enable us achieve our strategic growth objectives in a sustainable way.
II. Description and Objectives
SCIDaR is seeking to engage a Backend Engineer with strong programming and problem-solving skills to design, implement, and maintain server-side logic and APIs, to support our Data and Digital Solutions Project.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing technology platforms to support projects like POBR and other health and development initiatives. By building user-friendly digital products, the candidate ensures that programs have the tools needed to scale impact and improve decision-making.
III. Role Objectives
I. Develop and maintain backend services, APIs, and databases for Solina’s digital applications. II. Collaborate with frontend engineers, mobile developers, data scientists, and project teams to deliver integrated solutions.
III. Ensure backend systems are scalable, secure, and optimized for performance. IV. Contribute to code reviews, testing, and continuous improvement of backend services.
IV.Key Responsibilities
I. Design, implement, and maintain server-side logic and RESTful APIs. II. Develop and optimize databases (SQL/NoSQL).
- Ensure data security, integrity, and privacy in backend systems.
- Integrate third-party services and APIs into applications. V. Monitor and troubleshoot backend performance issues.
V.Competencies
- Proficiency in backend languages/frameworks (Node.js, Django, Flask, or similar).
- Strong understanding of database design and management (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB).
- Knowledge of authentication and authorization protocols (OAuth, JWT). IV. Good collaboration and problem-solving skills.
V. Attention to detail and commitment to code quality.
VI.Functional Skills & Knowledge
- Backend development (Node.js, Django, Flask, or similar).
- Database management (SQL and NoSQL).
- API development and integration.
- Familiarity with Git/GitHub for version control.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms is a plus.
VII.Education
Minimum of second-class upper bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
VIII. Experience
2–3 years of hands-on experience in backend development. Experience building applications for social impact, health, or development projects is an advantage.
